The Owl
The Newsletter of OECHS --December 1, 2024
Class of 2029 Parent Information Sessions
Do you know of an 8th grader who would be interested in becoming an Owl? We are going over the process of joining the Class of 2029 at OECHS through several Parent Information Sessions. All sessions will begin at 5:30 PM and parents and students can join us at any of the sessions! We will also have current OECHS students at each session to answer questions and provide a student perspective. Please help us spread the word!
Prom Committee Meeting
Our first prom committee meeting will be on December 11th at 5:30 PM in R105 (the Big Room) in the Ragsdale Building at CCCC. Please come and join us!
Blackboard for CCCC Grades
Parents are highly encouraged to ask their Owls to open Blackboard on their laptops or phones to show their CCCC grades! Unfortunately, OECHS staff do not have access to your child's grades, and having our Owls pull up Blackboard is also the only way we can see their current status in college classes.
Juniors and Seniors were reminded that they need to have CCCC grades of 73 or higher to transfer their grades to the next college or university. If they do not achieve this, they could end up having to retake the course and/or stay on campus until 4:30 PM. Failing CCCC courses could impact whether students will receive their associate degree.
Please help us as another set of eyes to keep watch over these college grades! We want all of our Owls to succeed!
Parents: Join Our Remind Groups!
Along with Blackboard, emails, the OECHS website, and social media, our school uses Remind to inform parents of weather bulletins, weekly newsletters, and more. If you are the parent or guardian of an OECHS Owl, please join the appropriate Remind group!

Driving Permits, Licenses, and GPAs
"North Carolina House Bill 769 became effective December 1, 1997 and reflects a coordinated statewide effort to motivate and encourage students to complete high school. This legislation requires that a student's driving permit or license be revoked if a student is unable to maintain adequate progress or drops out of school. Adequate progress is defined as passing 70% of all courses and is determined by first semester grades and second semester grades for schools on block scheduling. For schools on a traditional six-period day schedule, grades are determined by first semester grades and end-of-year grades."
Students need to maintain "adequate progress" to remain eligible for permits and licenses while in high school. Each semester, we are to notify students (and the district) when any students are not making adequate progress at the end of a semester/year. Students will then have to earn back the ability to have a permit or license after the next semester's grades are complete (and pay $50 to the DMV to have their permit or license reinstated). Bottom line: Keep your grades up in your high school and college classes or you will lose your driver's permit or license!
