Parents,
As summer continues, so do our plans with regard to the upcoming school year. The NPS Back-to-School Task Force continues to closely monitor ongoing developments surrounding Covid-19 and work through the variety of issues created by the global pandemic. Again, we will release education options for families in July.
This week, the task force reviewed survey data and discussed the school calendar, learning management systems and important academic and social/emotional support that will be needed for returning students. There was additional discussion with regard to transmission prevention practices and enhanced health and safety protocols. We still have work to do but we are getting closer to outlining what next year will look like for students and families.
Thank you to those of you who recently completed the back-to school survey. We were pleased to learn the vast majority of parents and guardians who participated plan for their students to return to our schools this fall. It was also made abundantly clear that the safety of students and staff is of the utmost importance — a sentiment that we absolutely share.
Parents who participated told us their primary concern is that social distancing will be difficult for students but also worry students may be too restricted. Nearly all participants expect frequent sanitation and cleaning of classrooms and common areas. We also learned that if schools are required to close again in the future, the top concern is motivating students to learn, followed by mental health issues.
As we continue to solicit your feedback, please take a moment to answer some brief follow-up survey questions. This survey will close Thursday, June 25. Click here to complete the parent survey.
As we approach the month, we are also excited about the in-person graduation ceremonies that will occur next weekend at the NPS Harve Collins Stadium. As a reminder, the Norman North ceremony is Friday, June 26, at 8 p.m. and the Norman High ceremony is Saturday, June 27, at 9 a.m. Each graduate may reserve four tickets for family and friends through a reservation link that high school principals will share with seniors and their families soon. Please stay tuned for information from principals about the physical distancing guidelines and safety protocols. We are excited to provide in-person graduation ceremonies but it is important that we do this with safety as our top priority.
I also want to point out that we have updated our summer meal distribution plan to further streamline the process for students in need. We now offer an evening pickup option one night per week to accommodate working families. Please note that to ensure we are using our resources as efficiently as possible, we have reduced the number of schools that serve as meal distribution sites and encourage families to instead visit another nearby school. Please visit www.normanpublicschools.org/meals to view the distribution sites, order meals and learn more information.
This summer is certainly different than any other. There is a lot to process and many heavy topics on minds across the nation. But we will get through this if we show one another kindness and grace. This is the first time we have ever endured a global pandemic and we appreciate your support as we continue to navigate this uncharted territory.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nick Migliorino
Superintendent
