Principal's Message
I hope this message finds you and your family safe, healthy, and in good spirits. Last year as I wrote this message, we were still in the midst of figuring out how that school year would end and how we would begin our current year. Although this has been a year full of constant changes, our students, staff, and community navigated through this exceptionally well.
A heartfelt and tremendous thank you to our teachers who changed and modified the way they instructed and assessed their students. With so much information coming at them in such a short period of time, their positivity and optimism to handle such changes were impressive. Their can-do spirit and drive to provide a meaningful education to our students have been inspiring. I also want to point out that Staff Appreciation Week is next week, May 3 through May 7. I hope students, parents, and the community will take time during this week to share their gratitude for what our teachers and staff members provide for all of us.
And to our students, I echo that very sentiment of grateful appreciation as well. They’ve experienced schooling in a manner unlike any year and had to constantly adjust to different instructional and assessment strategies while also foregoing many of the social experiences and opportunities that a high school provides. We were ecstatic when students were able to return to school this year. They are indeed the life of our school.
With that in mind, we are recognizing and celebrating our students’ achievements this year. Our underclassmen awards will be held on Monday, June 7. This celebration will be virtual. Our Senior class awards will be on Wednesday, June 9, and we will be inviting students to attend in-person in their graduation regalia. This event will be live streamed as well for families to watch. Our Senior Community Awards will be Sunday, June 13. We will be inviting Senior award recipients to attend this event with two guests. This too will be live streamed. Additional information will be sent to students and families as these events near.
I also must thank our parent organizations, the WM&AA, WWABC, and PTSO for their continued efforts to find ways to support our students. To Ms. Cammarota, Ms. Costanzo, Ms. Bruecken-Thoden, Ms. Maulfair, and many other parents who have been instrumental in planning experiences for our Seniors this year – thank you, thank you! My apologies if I have missed anyone, however, please know we’re grateful for your efforts on behalf of our Seniors.
We are very pleased and excited that our Seniors will be able to graduate together as a class on June 17. Graduation is scheduled for 8 AM and it will be held rain or shine in our stadium. Seniors must arrive at school by 6:30 AM that morning. We will have practices leading up to graduation so Seniors will be aware of what to expect and where they need to be. Each graduate may have up to five guests. Additional information will be shared with Seniors and their parents/guardians regarding more specific graduation plans. For those family members unable to attend, the graduation will be live streamed. Anyone with questions should contact our Senior Class Sponsor, Ms. Brianne Allis at Brianne.Allis@lcps.org
SOL testing is underway and will continue well into May. Also, AP Testing will begin on Tuesday, May 18. To view the schedule for our SOL and AP tests, please use this link: WHS - Testing Schedule Students taking SOL tests at Woodgrove must bring their Chromebook (fully charged) along with their charger. Please contact Ms. Justine Jarvis, our Testing Coordinator, with any questions. Justine.Jarvis@lcps.org
Lastly, on behalf of staff, please know that we are grateful and honored to be a part of this exceptional Woodgrove community. Thank you for your continued support. May you and yours be safe and healthy.

Sports Injuries
Rib Injuries
Rib injuries are like back injuries in that you take the twisting, turning and breathing for granted until you injure the ribs and then any single movement can cause pain. The ribs function as protection for the vital organs in the chest cavity. Between the ribs are small muscles for support, which are called the intercostals. The ribs attach to the sternum (breastbone) with cartilage at locations called costochondral junctions. The ribs are fairly resistant to injury. In children, there’s more elasticity in the bones, so there are fewer rib fractures in children than in adults. Because of their proximity to the skin, simple rib fractures are the most common form of chest injury. Excessive twisting of the trunk can trigger intercostal muscle strains. Costochondral separations can occur in which the rib separates from the sternum. Also, contusions (bruises) of the ribs are very common.
Rib injuries are so debilitating because simple breathing aggravates any rib injury. They are usually diagnosed by the mechanism of injury as to whether you’ve sustained a fracture as opposed to a strain. With fractures, in addition to pain, you can have bruising, muscle spasm over the rib and maybe some crunching type sounds when the rib is touched. A fairly high percentage 20-25% of rib fractures don’t show up on initial X-rays. But an X-ray remains the most effective means of diagnosis.
Icing the injury at an early stage can also help reduce the inflammation a decrease pain as well. Rib fractures take approximately 4-6 weeks to heal. Costochondral separation recovery time is longer due to slower healing time, which may take twice as long.
The best way to prevent rib injuries especially in contact sports such as football is the use protective equipment (flack jacket). Also strengthening and flexibility exercises for the back and abdominal muscles are also helpful.
Fitness
Dangers of “Workout Boosters”
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned marketers of dietary supplements known as “workout boosters”. These popular supplements could increase blood pressure, potentially causing shortness of breath or heart attacks.
With names like Jack3d, OxyElite Pro, Napalm, Code Red and Lean-Efx, these products have been popular with athletes and fitness buffs because they contain an ingredient, known as dimethylamylamine or (DMAA), advertised to increase energy, concentration, and metabolism.
But in a warning from the FDA’s director of dietary supplements, companies that distribute DMAA had failed to demonstrate its safety. Agency officials wrote in letters “DMAA narrows the blood vessels and arteries, frequently leading to elevated blood pressure.
DMAA was originally developed in the 1940’s by Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company, as a nasal decongestant called Forthane, but the drug maker stopped making the medicine. In Canada, the government health agency has classified DMAA as an amphetamine like drug, prohibiting companies there from selling the ingredient as a dietary supplement. And a few years ago, the United States Defense Department investigated whether products containing DMAA played a role in the deaths of 2 soldiers.
A spokesman for GNC said the company was “unaware of any scientific or medical evidence which calls the safety of DMAA into question” and disagreed with the FDA’s action. Buyer beware!!
Congratulations!
Congratulations to Grace Harvey for earning a Gold Summa Cum Laude on the intermediate level National Latin Exam! This is the highest award that can be earned and reflects a great deal hard work.

Senior Exit Ticket
EVERY senior must complete the Senior Exit Ticket prior to May 14th which includes:
1. Senior Survey - In lieu of our typical in person meetings, senior surveys must be completed online this year. This is our only way to discover post graduation plans (even if you're still undecided), scholarships awarded and where to send your final transcripts.
When completing the survey, we understand that not all information may be known at that time. For this reason, students are able to ‘Save and Come Back’ to the survey to update any information previously entered and/or to add any new information (ie. scholarships received, secondary plans, etc.)
2. Senior Shoutout Slide - to be included in a slideshow which will air at our in person graduation and on our website/social media.
Students were given detailed lessons this past week on how to complete both tasks. To access the ticket, join the Schoology Course ‘WHS Senior Class Exit Ticket’ using the code QRWV-8PHD-888QR
Email Mrs. Harding with questions.

High School Parking Lot WiFi Access
In our efforts to continually improve and meet the challenges of a large school district, we are deploying solar powered WiFi to high school parking lots.
Each of our high schools will be equipped with a solar powered, cellular wireless access point that will provide coverage to a portion of each schools parking lot. This will allow for social distancing and access to digital resources for those in need of internet access. Each area depicted is an estimation of coverage and capacity may be impacted by weather, number of connected users and other factors. Areas selected are also monitored by LCPS Safety and Security patrols, camera's and other techniques to provide a safe environment.
