Project Spotlight: Lifetime Literacy
The Gala supports funding for teacher-driven grants that focus on innovative and differentiated curriculum. This year we have a spotlight project we are funding: Lifetime Literacy.
Reading and writing are critical to all aspects of learning. Sparking a joy and love of reading books or writing stories at a young age not only supports the educational experience, but also prepares our students throughout their entire lifetime. Whether they want to be scientists, teachers, artists or athletes, literacy is a key foundation. Funds raised at the Gala will support enhancements to the literacy program at Oak Grove including:
- Access to a broader selection of books
- Creative writing/storytelling programs
- Technical writing workshops
- Reading support
- Reading and writing for STEM
- Professional development
- And much more
Share the Gift of Reading - Donate a Book
We are collecting book donations to share with other schools in our community. Bring a book to donate and earn a free raffle ticket!

Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
The fourth area of the new Social Science content standards is History. The history concepts include:
Change, Continuity, and Context
Perspectives
Historical Sources and Evidence
Causation and Argumentation
As previously mentioned, these are K-12 themes which look different across the grades. For example, in first grade that means students will create a chronological sequence of multiple events. In third grade that means students will describe how significant people, events, and developments have shaped their own community and region. In grade five, students will use information about a historical source-including the maker, date, place of origin, intended audience, and purpose-to-judge the extent to which the source is useful for studying a particular topic. And in middle school it evolves into, “organizing applicable evidence into a coherent argument about the past.”
If you missed any of the last three weeks, we reviewed Civics, Geography, and Financial Literacy standards in the OG News. For more information feel free to use the direct Link to the Illinois Social Science Standards or the link to the ISBE page with Social Science Resources.
Science Club News
This week we will be meeting on Friday, 12/13, in Mrs. Edelson's science lab from 3:30-4:30. We will NOT be doing a lab activity this week. Instead, we will be giving the YBTCC (You Be The Chemist Challenge) qualifying exam. It consists of a timed, multiple choice, 40 question test. Students with the top four highest scores will be selected to represent Oak Grove during the regional competition in the spring. If your child is not interested in taking the test but still wants to be part of the science club, they do not need to come on Friday.
Here is a list of future dates;
January 10, 2020 (3:30pm-4:30 pm)
January 24, 2020 (3:30pm-4:30 pm)
February 7, 2020 (3:30pm-4:30 pm)
February 21, 2020 (3:30pm-4:30 pm)
More dates may be announced as needed once the Regional Challenge Date is finalized. Please arrange for a 4:30pm pickup from Science Club meetings.
