RES Newsletter #18
A Note From Ms. C
At recess last week, a group of energetic students gathered together on the basketball court for an impromptu game of basketball. From the outside, one could observe a gaggle of young people smiling, yelling, and bouncing back and forth together. Upon closer observation though, what is revealed is a community of young people who - on their own, but with adult supervision nearby if intervention was needed - were negotiating relationships, advocating for needs, listening to each other, making compromises, and working through feelings. Of course there were disagreements and bumpy moments, this is how learning happens, but this amazing group of kiddos spanning ages from six through eleven were coming together to listen, process, and create together. This is the important work of school. These are the moments where we feel so much joy and gratitude for this amazing school community - its members both young and old. Dear RES Community,
Literacy Night - Thank you, Mrs. O'Neill
A huge thank you to Mrs. O’Neill for planning such a fun Literacy Night last Friday! Thank you, also, to all of the families who joined us for the Seusstastic evening! Also, thank you to Jennifer Cyr for coming to share her stories with our students and for donating a set of her Honu and Kiyaya books to the RES Library!
Mrs. Holmquist's Class Learns About VT Animals First-Hand from Game Warden!
Justin Goodwin, Vermont Game Warden, visited Mrs. Holmquist’s classroom last week and brought some fascinating pelts and bones with him for students to explore! The visit integrated with the learning the students have been engaged in regarding animal adaptations and how they interact and impact an environment.
Neurodiversity Celebration Week
The week of 3/18 is Neurodiversity Celebration Week. During this week, we will be engaging in discussions and learning about how all minds are unique and will be celebrating all the ways that we can think, express, learn, and think, culminating in a school-wide art project!
Spring Conferences
As part of the updated progress reporting system, the spring conference window opens March 22. The goal of this conference is to be in person, as teachers plan to share student work and current progress toward the standards. If they haven't already, your child's teacher will be reaching out in the near future with a conference schedule.
Eclipse Update
Remember, Monday April 8th, is an early release day due to the eclipse (this is in addition to the scheduled early release day on April 3rd). Every ACSD student will receive eclipse glasses. Visit our eclipse web page to learn more about what your students may be doing at school and activities to try at home! For eclipse-specific traffic and weather updates, VT Emergency Management is offering a text update system. Text VTECLIPSE to 888777.
ACSD Preschool Enrollment
If you have a child who will be 3 by Sept 1, 2024 and needs preschool placement, please fill out the preschool interest survey by the end of March. ACSD has two school-based programs: Mary Hogan and Bridport. Space is extremely limited, so we also encourage you to consider other preschool options. ACSD partners with prequalified private preschool programs to pay tuition for 10 hours/week, 35 weeks/year of preschool. This means your child could receive a tuition discount at a private preschool. Your first step is to enroll with the program directly. They will help you to complete the preschool tuition paperwork. Visit this site for more about which local programs have met the quality standards for partnership or contact Meg Baker at mbaker@acsdvt.org or 382-0045
