Spartan Weekly
News from Glen Crest Middle School: August 25th, 2024
From the principal
Wow, we had a great start to the school year this week!! It has been so great seeing our students in the building; we are really excited for this school year!
We will be hosting Curriculum Night at Glen Crest on Tuesday, August 27. Glenbard South High School will be giving a presentation to 8th grade parents in the upper gym from 6 to 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:45 p.m.). We will have an open house format session from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. (doors open at 6:25 p.m.). Teachers will be in their classrooms; there is no schedule for parents to follow. Finally, we will give a school wide presentation in the upper gym from 7:20 to 7:45 p.m. for anyone who would like to attend. We look forward to seeing all those that can attend!
Thanks to all of our parents for their efforts to follow our drop-off and pick-up procedures. A few quick reminders: parents should not be pulling into our parking lot to drop off or pick up at the front of the school. This area is reserved for buses, parents of injured students, and parents who have permission to drop off in this area. Also, please do not park or get out of your car, in the drop-off and pick-off lane. This area is a fluid space and the traffic in this line needs to keep moving. We appreciate everyone following these procedures!
Finally, families can stay up to date on school events by checking "daily announcements" under the "About Glen Crest" tab of the school's website or going to www.ccsd89.org/GCdaily. These announcements are read every morning, and emailed to every student each day.
We hope everyone has had a great first week of school!

MAP Testing: August 28 and August 29
All Glen Crest students will participate in MAP testing on August 28 and August 29. Our students will be on a modified schedule for these days. We use MAP testing to monitor student growth in learning, and our School Improvement Plan goals are aligned to student growth in MAP testing. We MAP test in the fall, the winter, and then again in the spring. Please support these efforts by encouraging your student(s) to do their best on our MAP test, we appreciate the support!
If you are interested in learning more about MAP testing from the parent perspective, feel free to take a look at the family toolkit provided by NWEA MAP.
Lunch Seating Clarification
We have received some feedback from parents regarding our “assigned seat” policy in lunches. Please see below for details.
Students can pick their seats during the first week of school
Based on where kids want to sit, we will create a seating chart. The purpose of this is to ensure the safety of our students by making sure our students are where they are supposed to be. Additionally, one issue we see at the middle school level is that students get “bumped” out of their seats by other students, which can often create tension for our students.
Students can request a change in their seat location at any time by seeing myself, Mrs. Smith or the lunchroom supervisor.
Our intention is to keep our students physically and psychologically safe with this policy.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you for your understanding.

New Glen Crest Middle School Spartan logo!
Glen Crest Middle School has a new logo! Last school year, Glen Crest held focus-group meetings with students and staff members to identify their preferences for a new logo and the qualities they feel represent the school. That feedback was incorporated into the final design by Dominic Buckner, a recent graduate of Northern Illinois University.
About the logo: The new Glen Crest logo incorporates the classic Spartan helmet with a prominent ’G’ and hidden ‘C’ as part of the Spartan’s helmet. The round, rotational design represents the always-evolving nature of Glen Crest Middle School.
The Spartan head is looking forward in a determined manner, representative of the students at Glen Crest. The logo is modern, classic, and evolving – characteristics that students and staff members associate with their school.
The logos are the property of Community Consolidated School District 89 and should not be used without permission of the school principal.
