June is National Caribbean Heritage Month
This month we recognize the achievements, influence and contributions of Caribbean Americans during National Caribbean American Month (NCAM). In 2005, Dr. Claire Nelson, futurist, sustainability engineer, and innovation consultant, led the campaign to declare June a celebration of Caribbean Americans. Nelson partnered with US Representative Barbara Lee to introduce legislation recognizing the role of Caribbean people and their descendants in the history and culture of the United States. The Caribbean region is home to over a dozen island nations, including Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad.

Learner's Permit Day at the Brook
On Wed, May 29, 2024, MDOT staff administered the learners' permit test to students at Springbrook High School. We congratulate 40 Blue Devils on passing their examination. Ms. Nicole Brown, Internship Coordinator, partnered with MDOT to advantage Springbrook students as they plan for internship, apprenticeship, and work. Always planning, Ms. Brown looks forward to working with MDOT again to host a similar Learner's Permit Day next school year. By the way, because of Ms. Brown, Springbrook is the first high school to offer this opportunity in any MCPS school!
Springbrook's Library Media Center Highlights the BOTW
Rising Class
Journalist Miller investigates three individuals as they commence their first year of college at the brink of the pandemic. Briani is a Latina from Lawrenceville, Georgia; Connor and Jacklyn (who present as white) originate from Springfield, Missouri. Briani and Connor attend Columbia University while Jaclyn commutes to Ozark Technical Community College. All three are the first in their families to go to college but face distinct social-class struggles. While the outside world may have preconceived notions about them (often biased ones), these students carry invisible scars, such as anxiety, family issues, financial insecurity and, now, COVID-19. Miller’s book sheds light on costly tuition rates and resource disparities, particularly at Ivy League institutions. She also does a thorough job of researching her subjects, exposing the highlights and pitfalls freshman year can hold. Readers of diverse economic backgrounds and those who have been impacted by the pandemic schooling system will find something to relate to with Briani, Connor, and Jacklyn.
