A Note from Our Principals
Welcome to a new school year!
Yesterday, Wednesday, August 14th, you should have received a message with your child's teacher placement. Please note that a lot of time and effort goes into the placement process, and after providing the opportunity to provide input in your child’s placement each spring, we cannot honor requests to change classrooms once these assignments come out.
If you did not receive a teacher placement message, please don't panic as this doesn't mean your child is not placed. If this occurs, please contact Waubesa Principal, Mr. Shefchik shefchc@mcfsd.org. to help resolve this for you.
We look forward to another successful and enjoyable year of learning with your student(s). Thank you for taking the time to read the information in this newsletter.
Please reach out if you have any questions.
Corey Shefchik: WIS Principal
Brooke Hauser: K-5 Associate Principal
K-5 Associate Principal Transition
Per Superintendent Aaron Tarnutzer’s July 29 memo, we are now transitioning into a K-5 Associate Principal position and grateful to have Dr. Brooke Hauser stepping into this role. Many of you know Dr. Hauser as she’s served as the K-2 Associate Principal and Director of Instructional Technology for the past five years. Prior to Dr. Hauser’s administrative roles, she worked at Waubesa and CEPS as a Technology Integrator and Library/Tech teacher starting in 2009.
While this transition will be new and challenging, please know that Dr. Hauser and Mr. Shefchik are committed to working collaboratively as an EC-5 administrative team with Mr. Nelson (CEPS principal) to provide the support and services our EC-5 students, families, and staff deserve. We’ve been working hard the past couple of weeks to develop our new roles and responsibilities. We will remain focused on our mission of “Meeting the Needs of Every Learner, Every Day.” We will use a continuous improvement and growth mindset, as we recognize that with any new change, we will need to adapt, pivot, and rework our initial thinking.
Thank you in advance for your patience and grace as we grow together in our new principal partnership.
Partner Teacher Model
What will my student's schedule look like? Your student will have a homeroom teacher who will serve as the primary point of communication and will also provide instruction and support in homeroom time and Spotlight (additional practice and extension time). Your child will receive instruction in literacy (reading and writing), math, social studies, and science by both the homeroom teacher and the partner teacher. Teacher partners meet and plan each day to ensure they’re meeting your student’s unique social, emotional, and academic needs.
What are the homeroom teacher partnerships?
3rd Grade:
- Mrs. Graber/Mr. Joyce
- Mrs. Atkins/Mrs. McKernan
- Mrs. Rowley/Ms. Wherley
- Mrs. Wogsland (stand alone classroom)
4th Grade:
- Ms. Bast/Ms. Rice
- Mrs. Chapman/Mrs. Ortman
- Ms. Acevedo (stand alone classroom)
- Ms. Schut/Mrs. Swierczek
5th Grade:
- Mrs. Lackey/Mr. Wells
- Mr. Garvey/Ms. Coats
- Ms. Eversoll/Mr. Grenzow
- Ms. Price/Mrs. Wilson
What if a grade level has 7 sections, an odd number of teachers? We do have seven sections in 3rd and 4th grade this year. If your child has that teacher, they will receive instruction in all core subjects from that one teacher.
Will the Partner Teaching Model impact Related Arts classes? No. Students will continue to have a rotating 6-day schedule as they have had at CEPS and WIS last year.

Important School Procedures - Please Review
As part of the registration process, you are asked to review and sign off that you've read the family handbook for the 2024-25 school year. We wanted to bring to your attention to a couple important procedures/guidelines.
BEVERAGES AT SCHOOL - We do not allow soda and beverages containing caffeine to be consumed at school. Cold water is available to students throughout the day.
BIRTHDAY/CLASSROOM TREATS
We understand that your child’s birthday is a special day but treats and toys should be saved for the parties you host at home and not be delivered to the school. Briefly, the reasons behind this request are that it eliminates the concern for students with food allergies, promotes equity among students of all socioeconomic backgrounds, removes the management of treats and toys for staff, and reduces distraction during the day. Teachers might still request specific party food items to be sent in for classroom celebrations, which is fine.
DELIVERIES: In an effort to keep our students and staff safe at Waubesa we are working on having a drop off/delivery area in our vestibule. If your student forgot their lunch, shoes, homework, etc. please leave them on the table in the vestibule. We will provide a note and pen if you need to label your students items. We will also start placing any material for pick up on the table such as; homework, books, etc.We will check the table multiple times a day to ensure your student receives their items.
PHONES, WATCHES, AND PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICES: the expectations at WIS are that students do not access their cell phones or other personal electronic devices (such as smart watches, etc.) during the school day. This can be a distraction to them and other students. If your child brings one of these devices to school, we ask that they turn it off when the day starts and leave it in their backpacks. We ask families to refrain from texting or calling your child’s cell phone or Smartwatch to avoid distractions for your child and others. If you need to contact your child during the day please call our school office, and they will pass along a message. If your student needs to contact you for an urgent matter, they can ask their teacher for permission to come to the office and use our office phone to contact you. District Policy 5136 (PERSONAL COMMUNICATION DEVICES) outlines personal electronic usage at school and other school events including field trips.
VISITOR INFORMATION: With safety being our top priority, the following guidelines are in place for visitors to WIS.
We use a Visitor Management System for any non-staff visitor that enters our building beyond the main office area, and it runs a quick background check and provides a name badge to wear for the duration of the visit.
Due to space limitations, we do not accommodate lunch visitors in the lunchroom. If you’d like to eat lunch with your student, you are able to check out your child for the lunch period; please call our main office that morning to set up.
Parents and guardians may pick students up early for appointments, etc. Please notify the main office and classroom teacher by phone or email by 7:45 AM on the morning of the early pick-up.
Other non-parent/guardian adults may only pick students up during the day with prior parent/guardian permission. The parent/guardian must call or email the main office on the morning of the early pick-up. The parent/guardian is also responsible for making sure the visitor knows that a photo ID will be required.
If a visitor arrives without prior parent/guardian permission, they will be directed by our office staff to contact the parent/guardian who must then call the office before being allowed to visit for lunch or pick-up the child.
VOLUNTEERS: We are happy to welcome parents/guardians and other community members who wish to volunteer in our district. Interested individuals may begin the process by completing a Volunteer Application Form and an administrative assistant will follow up with you. A background check is required for all individuals who will have access to students in the course of their volunteer work. For more information on volunteering please visit the District website.

Weekly Communication from Waubesa:
Our "Waubesa Weekly" communication will be sent on Sunday evenings via Smores. This newsletter will include any announcements for the upcoming week, important updates, and frequently referenced links.
First Day of School: The first day of school is Tuesday, September 3rd, and is a full day of school. It is a required attendance day for all students. Breakfast is served each morning from 7:25 until 7:55 in the cafeteria. If your child is not having breakfast, they may be dropped off after 7:25. Playground supervision will be provided from 7:25 until 7:47, when the first bell rings, signaling students into the building. When the second bell rings at 7:55, all students should be in their classrooms. Our end of the day dismissal bell rings at 2:55.
Attendance/Absences: As long as your child is feeling well, getting them to school every day and on time is one of the best things you can do to support their progress. That said, if your child is ill, has an appointment, etc., please follow the Absence Request Process on Infinite Campus to note your child’s attendance accordingly. Families are asked to follow our absence protocols before 8:15 a.m. If you fail to report an absence by 8:30 a.m., school personnel will contact you either at home or at work to confirm your student’s absence or tardiness.
School Supplies: Supply lists are updated on the school website. You may also choose to order a supply kit through our PTO by clicking here. Please plan to bring these items to our “Welcome Back” night!
Daily Snacks: An optional snack time is scheduled daily for students. If you would like your child to have a snack, please send them with one each day in either a prepackaged or resealable container. We encourage you to send healthy snacks that are quick to eat and make minimal mess, like veggie sticks, whole-grain crackers, granola bar, fruit snacks, fruit slices, etc. We cannot provide snacks for all students, so if your child wants one, please send one. All snacks must be peanut and tree nut-free as they are eaten in our classrooms. In addition, we encourage each child to bring a reusable water bottle to drink from throughout the day.
Allergy Information: All McFarland schools are latex-free, and only Mylar or similar latex-free materials are allowed in the buildings. In addition, all classrooms and office spaces are peanut and tree nut-free; the cafeteria is the only location where peanuts/tree nuts are permitted. Alternative tablespaces are provided as an option upon parent/guardian request in the cafeteria for students with peanut and tree nut allergies. Please contact our WIS Health Assistant Sadie Frank at frankm@mcfsd.org if you would like to request this accommodation for your child.
Nelson’s Bus Service: Please call 608-205-9040 for bus schedule information and questions.
