The Woodland Weekly
March 28, 2025
Dear Woodland Families,
With the warmer weather we know families are spending time at the playground and on the field here at Woodland. While we encourage you to utilize our space, we kindly ask for your cooperation in ensuring that the school playground remains reserved for students during school hours. Though the district has asked for the campuses to be closed to the public from 7:00-4:00, we recognize that you are not the general public. As a compromise, for the safety and supervision of all children, the playground will be available for public use after school dismisses to busses at 3:25 PM.
We appreciate your support in helping us maintain a safe environment. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation!
Best regards,
Emma and Kayla

Physical Education
During the month of March, students in PE class have been practicing volleyball skills with balloons. They have learned some of the rules to the game as well as practicing the bump (forearm pass) and the set.
They have also learned about the history of the sport and took a virtual field trip to the Volleyball Hall of Fame in Holyoke!
We have also been talking about nutrition and healthy eating habits during class. Students learned about MyPlate and the 5 food groups.
Next month, we begin team games in class. We will focus on teamwork and sportsmanship while participating in team games.

Art
SPRING has finally arrived and we couldn't be happier about it! Students had a blast around St. Patrick's Day making folding leprechauns and playing roll-a-leprechaun games. Students in grade 2 read the story Mr. Tiger Goes Wild, and made their own fantastic tigers, now they're diving head first into a 3 week project learning about Henri Matisse. Kindergartners are practicing their letters and making letter monsters, while students in grade 1 are using roll-a-dice games to practice math and draw their own silly pictures. We're gearing up to do a collaborative tessellation project with Ms. Brown in preparation for the Spring Concert coming up in May.
Digital Literacy
Students in Digital Literacy have been working with many fun robot activities! We still have more robots to explore with this year, but the students and I are having a great time working with all of the different gadgets! SO far we have made obstacle courses for the Sphero Minis to go through, and dressed our Ozobots up as birds that are migrating back north after the winter!
STEM
Hello families!
We've been busy as always here in STEM. Second and first grade students have finished up learning about habitats, while kindergarten in still learning about the ocean. This week, as I'm sure you've heard, we had a visit from one of Woodland's favorite authors who talked to students about his book "So Much Slime." And starting the next day, every class that comes to STEM is getting to make their own slime! Mrs. Rood and Mrs. Brady have been joining in on the fun, and students have been doing a really great job of being slime scientists. Many students have made connections to different slime recipes they've used in the past, and have also talked about experimenting with more slime recipes in the future! Once all of the classes have finished up making their slime, we'll be moving on to a new unit: the E in STEM - Engineering!

Music
Hello everyone!
I hope you have been enjoying some of the Spring weather that's finally arriving. Believe it or not, we'll be preparing for our Spring Concert soon!
In Kindergarten, we have started working on musical opposites - fast and slow, high and low, loud and soft. We read John Lithgow's Carnival of the Animals and are now listening to the music written by Camille Saint-Saens. Here is a great video read-aloud of the book with the songs included. We've also talked about Chrome Music Lab, which is a fun website for making music at home.
First Graders are now learning about long sounds in music. They will learn how to connect 2 sounds together and we'll even learn the "grown up" names of the music notes. You can check out different ways to make long and short sounds on Chrome Music Lab
In Second Grade, we are getting ready for a big composing project. First, we will learn about home notes and passing notes. Then, as a grade, we will create an original song to be performed at the Spring Concert. Here is a great YouTube page to help practice these new notes at home.
Check out Pamyua, March's Musician of the Month and keep singing!
