St. Luke Weekly SMORE
September 19, 2021
St. Luke Community,
This week students participated in the Terry Fox Run and Tried Like Terry! Students learned he was a great example of someone who used his gifts and talents to help others. He was told at a very early age he had cancer and instead of giving up hope he found his purpose. Terry knew he was meant to do more; he knew that he was ‘Called to More.’ It was a wonderful day and we thank all you who donated online and brought in toonies for Terry.
We are now in full swing at St. Luke. Our option program, leadership program and lunch time clubs are keeping our students involved in activities within their cohorts. We encourage all our middle school students to try something new. This year we did not have enough students to form a volleyball team. We will instead form a volleyball club at lunch recess twice a week where students can come to practice their volleyball skills and participate in some friendly volleyball games with students in their cohorts. At this time the volleyball club is limited to grades 5 - 8.
Our Opportunity Room (OR) is new this year. This program runs over the lunch time on Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays and gives students the opportunity to finish homework that was not completed, ask for specific help with academics, and/or provide support with disciplinary issues. Students that have been sent to the OR by the classroom teachers will be notified.
We look forward to another fantastic week!
Mrs. Cathy Hinger
CHAPLAIN'S CORNER: Mark 9:30-37 God help us to be Great
Jesus’ disciples seem to have forgotten that they need each other’s help. They forgot they needed each other’s help because they were arguing about who was the greatest and the best. Jesus tells his disciples to stop being “Know-it-alls” and just be you. Be people who know they need help from time to time. Accepting help may seem like a simple thing to you, but it is a really important thing for all of us to remember and practice.
When we know we need help, then it is easier to accept help. When we do accept God’s help, our best will become even better as we are 'Called To More.'
Please reach out if you or your family is experiencing any difficulties. Our Student Support Team is able for support.

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM EICS ON COVID RESTRICTIONS
Dear EICS Catholic School Community,
As announced on September 15, 2021, by Premier Kenney, Alberta has declared a state of public health emergency and will implement new health measures to expand capacity, increase vaccination rates and reduce transmission of COVID-19.
Within Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS) the move to include these new restrictions which are in effect starting September 16th will be relatively seamless since most of the recommendations were already in place within our schools.
Highlights include:
● Stay-at-home policy for any students/staff exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19
● Daily screening following the Alberta Health Daily Checklist
● All eligible staff and students are encouraged to be fully vaccinated for respiratory illnesses, where applicable, such as COVID-19 and influenza.
● When there is a confirmed case of COVID-19, parents and guardians are encouraged to notify school administrators of a positive COVID-19 test result. All reporting continues to be confidential.
● Staff and students who test positive for COVID-19 are required to isolate for a minimum of 10 days.
● All students and staff in Grades K-12 are required to wear a mask in all commonmareas, hallways, foyers, lunchrooms, libraries, and in areas where social distancing is not possible. Masks may be removed in classrooms when students are seated.
● Masks are required for all students and staff on school busses.
● Enhanced cleaning protocols and disinfecting will continue.
● All school council meetings that can be done virtually/teleconference moving forward are to be done in this manner.
● In-person parent gatherings are not to occur in our schools during the state of a public health emergency.
STUDENT ABSENCE IN POWERSCHOOL
A reminder for all families that the AHS Daily Assessment needs to be completed and actioned each morning prior to coming to school. If your child is experiencing symptoms please choose:
“Flu-like symptoms”
“other illness or injury” If they are experiencing symptoms that you do not deem to be flu-like, or your child has a medical appointment.
“parent excused.” If your child is experiencing no symptoms at all, please choose this. The parent excused absence should only be chosen if you are keeping your child home for a reason that does not pertain to a medical issue. (i.e dance competition)
Thank-you for doing your part to keep us all safe.
Learning Disruption Grant: Supporting Literacy and Numeracy
In addition to building our classroom communities, our Grades 1-3 teachers will work with students to assess and address any potential setbacks in literacy and math learning. Each year, we use the EICS Literacy and Numeracy Frameworks to determine areas which require focussed support and set learning goals. However, the disruption to in-class learning during the Covid-19 pandemic may have resulted in some of our students not attaining the skills they would have in a regular year. As a result, targeted literacy and math assessments designed and supported by the division will be used with all students in Grades 1-3 as an extension to the classroom processes already in place to identify students who require additional intervention to develop their skills and close gaps.
Alberta Education has provided funding to support schools with staffing and resources for these supplementary interventions. Students in Grades 2-3 will complete specialized assessments in September and students in Grade 1 will be assessed later in the school year. Interventions in both groupings will begin shortly afterward the assessments are complete. Students identified as requiring additional support will receive 30 hours of supplementary programming in literacy and between 20-30 hours of support in math in small group formats from specialized intervention teachers. During and after the intervention period, student progress will be monitored and communicated with classroom teachers and parents. A final communication of gains will also be provided to Alberta Education.
I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Kroeker will be taking on the Intervention Teacher role at St. Luke. Assessments on students have already begun!
More information will be shared through your child’s teacher.
MONDAY'S FEDERAL ELECTION: PARKING
Our school gym will be used as a polling station for the upcoming Federal Election on Monday from 6:30 a.m to 11:00 p.m. The public will enter and exit through the cafeteria doors and will not have any interaction with students and staff. COVID protocols will be enforced throughout this process.
The election workers will be using the side parking lot and the public voters will be using the parking spaces across from the cafeteria doors. I will be out directing traffic during drop off and pick up to make everything go as smoothly as possible but please be patient as we want to ensure the safety of all our students.
