Riverview Families,

Your child's attendance at school is extremely important. We completely understand that absences are sometimes necessary due to illness or other unique situations. However, research shows that, starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school. In fact, missing 10% (or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year) can make it harder to learn to read or stay on grade level in math. Absences and tardiness can affect the whole classroom if the teacher has to slow down learning to help children catch up.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves. Start building this habit now so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school, college, and when they enter the workforce.

So what can parents/guardians do to help?

• Set a regular early bedtime and morning routine.

• Limit/Eliminate screen time during evening hours to better ensure a good night sleep.

• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

• Take steps to keep your child healthy like washing hands, exercising, eating healthy, etc.

• Develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, a neighbor or another parent.

• Try to schedule medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.

• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors and other parents for advice on how to make your child feel comfortable and excited about learning.

• If your child must stay home due to illness, ask the teacher for resources and ideas to continue learning at home.

Every year, Education Minnesota honors an education support professional (ESP) with the ESP of the Year Award. Riverview's Karen Vickery was nominated for the 2024-2025 award and is very deserving of this honor! She works in our SMI (severely multiply impaired) program and provides top notch service and support for her learners and her teammates at Riverivew. She brings years of knowledge and experience to our school and also provides lots of smiles and laughs for everyone around her. We are grateful for all she does and congratulate her on this honor!

The next PTP meeting will be on Nov. 12 at Riverview. We will get started at 5:30 and will wrap up around 7:00. All Riverview parents/guardians are invited to attend and help the group impact the students and staff at Riverview. PTP is excited to offer RVES Bowling Nights at Farmington Lanes! As much as possible, we would like to have younger grades (K-3) on Nov 22 and older grades (4-5 & MA) on Dec 13. That said, if it works best for your family to come on the other night, please feel free to sign up. We hope you are able to join us for a fun night out as we try to creatively build connections between every member of our school community. See you at the lanes!

The weather this time of year is unpredictable, but colder temps are on the way. Please be sure to send your child to school with a winter coat, hat, and gloves. Also, please label each piece of clothing with your child's name so we can return it to them easily if they happen to misplace it.

If you are facing financial hardship and need assistance in getting your child winter clothes (coat, hat, boots, gloves, snowpants, etc.), please reach out to Riverview's 360's community social worker, Ms. Lindsy Bednar at lbednar@farmington.k12.mn.us.

NAMI Minnesota is the Minnesota chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. It focuses on providing education, support, and advocacy for individuals affected by mental illness and their families. The organization offers resources such as support groups, educational programs, and outreach initiatives to raise awareness about mental health issues.Their mission is to improve the quality of life for those impacted by mental illness and to promote better understanding and treatment of mental health. They will meet on November 14th from 5:30-7:00 at the Special Services Center.

Join us at the Special Services Center on January 23 from 5:30-7:00 for an important collaboration with SpEd administrators and staff! This meeting will focus on the transition process for your child as they move through different grade levels within the Farmington School District. We'll discuss what to expect during these key transitions:

• Early Childhood to Kindergarten
• Elementary to Middle School
• Middle School to High School
• High School to Post-Secondary

We would like to remind you to please drive slowly and alertly when driving up 208th street on your way to Riverview and while you are in the parking lot while you visit our school. Community Ed is hosting a Book Fair November 11-15 at Meadowview Elementary and it's open to everyone! This is a fantastic opportunity for your child to discover new books they’ll love, and it’s a great way to bond over the joy of reading. Research shows that kids are more likely to read when they can choose their own books, which leads to academic growth and a boost in mental well-being.

Here’s what you need to know:

• Dates: November 11 – 15
• Time: 7:30 am - 5:00 pm (Friday closes at 4:00 pm)
• Location: Meadowview Elementary, Room 104 (enter through Door 22)

Our paraprofessionals are a vital part of our team and they do so much every day for our students. Like everyone, they have to miss work from time to time due to illness, family matters, etc. When that happens, it leaves our learners with less support. And unfortunately, often times these absences go "unfilled" due to a shortage of capable and willing subs. That is why we are asking for people in our Riverview community to consider being a para sub. The pay is $15 per hour and you can work as much (or as little) as you want. Whether you sub one day or every day, each time you enter a classroom, you are responsible for the helping the most important resource we have in our school -- our children.

If you would like to sign up to sub as a teacher or paraprofessional for the Farmington Schools you will have to apply through Teachers on Call (TOC). Please email or call TOC directly at 1800-713-4439 or apply online at teachersoncall.com.

If a student will be absent, a parent/guardian must call Riverview’s attendance line at 651-460-1605 prior to 8:45 AM each day of the absence. You can call 24/7 and if no one answers, please leave a message. We ask that parents/guardians provide the reason for the absence at the time they call. If the school does not receive a call from the parent/guardian the day of the absence, the student’s absence is automatically marked as unexcused.
