News You Can Use
As I write this, we are getting ready to begin our 21st day of school. As I look back on the last few days, I'm reminded that sometimes, I may forget to explain or clarify some of the events/activities/programs that are part of the Cottonwood culture. I've been doing things forever, so I assume that everyone already knows. I want to spend time this year, sharing our story.
Rise and Shine--Our Cottonwood community meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:45-8:55 in the gym. On Monday's, we talk about building our character. We continue to focus on respect and responsibility, but we're adding a few ideas from "The Seven Habits of Happy Kids." Our goal is to provide our students with the necessary tools to be strong, responsible, independent learners. On Wednesday's, we celebrate the students who have birthdays during the week. Friday's, we recognize various students with awards, bookmarks and brag tags. Students wearing Cottonwood or Andover shirts are eligible to win a water bottle if their name is called. Each morning, we also share announcements and the lunch menu.
Trojans in Training--A few years ago, the AHS Trojan Booster Club suggested that each elementary school have a special night to be recognized at an AHS football game. Our students have a special section where they can sit with their family and cheer on the Trojan's. Before the game, students get to walk out on the field and form the tunnel to cheer the players on. During the game, the Booster Club may come over and throw towels, mini-footballs, mega-phones, etc. It's another way to bring the Andover community together. Of course, everyone is always welcome to attend and support the Andover Trojans.
Greater Andover Days--An annual Fall celebration, the city of Andover hosts a carnival, concert, parade and party at the Central Park on September 28, 29th and 30th. The parade route starts at Cottonwood and travels down Andover Road to Andover Central High School. A list of activities for the 3 days of fun, can be found here. Information about the PTO float can be found below.
Walk to School -October 4th-Walk To School emphasizes safer routes for walking and bicycling and the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment and building connections between families and schools. Please join teachers, AHS students at one of three gathering places (to be announced) at 8:15 am on October 4th and we'll use the Red Bud Trail and walk to school together.
I hope to keep adding to this list each month. Please don't ever hesitate to ask questions or make suggestions to improve our community. It takes all of us working together to make a difference in the lives of our kids. They only get to experience being a child once and we want their experiences to be memorable, educational and character building.
Educationally yours,
Shari Rooks, Principal

School Safety
Breafast is served from 8:20-8:50.
After school dismissal is at 3:45. Please continue to follow the traffic patterns. It helps the adults if you have the name cards in the side windows. If you have suggestions on how to make our process and flow of traffic safer, feel free to share your ideas.

Counselor's Corner--Marcie Faust
Counselor Time:
This month the theme is friendship. Friendship is a relationship to someone with whom we enjoy sharing our thoughts, ideas and time. Someone once said, “A good friend is more valuable than gold”. Please reaffirm good behavior and being a great friend.
Group and Individual Counseling:
I have time each day to visit with children in a one-to-one setting. Please let your students know that confidentiality will always be respected. They can place a note in my box or ask their teachers.
We continue to have small groups at CES. The groups include: friendship, divorce, grief support, new kids, anger management, etc….Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the groups. I meet with the teachers to set the groups during the least restrictive times. Some groups are offered during lunch time.
