This time of year can be challenging with the snow and the cold starting to take a toll on all of us as we wish for a chance to be outside and get some natural light. I am really proud of how our students continue to work hard every day and push themselves in their learning. I love their energy and curiosity.

The background picture of this week's newsletter features our Forensics team after a recent successful performance, and the inset picture to the right, you will see a group of students that won a prize for their Warrior greenhouse at the NARI convention. So proud of our kids - they shine!

If you are looking for some Warrior action this weekend, our swim team is hosting the swim sectional at MHS starting at 1:00 pm on Saturday.

Keep an eye on your mailbox! National Honor Society eligibility letters for juniors will be sent out this upcoming week. If your student (junior) meets the 3.5 weighted cumulative GPA requirement to apply, they will receive a letter with further details on the application process.

The Educators Rising organizations across the state are collecting tissues as our service project. Classroom supplies of tissue tend to dwindle this time of year and who doesn’t need an extra box or two of tissues in their classrooms? We are collecting boxes of tissues to distribute across MHS classrooms as well as bringing boxes to our state conference.

• Donations can be dropped off at the attendance office/front entrance. Mention Educators Rising/Mrs. Plitzuweit (advisor) or students can bring in donations to their first hour classrooms.

• The first hour class with the most boxes of tissue collected will get donuts.

Educators Rising is an organization for aspiring educators, leaders, counselors, and others in the field of education. Our members attend a state conference held at UW-Stevens Point at the beginning of March.

The course request window for summer school 2025 opens Wednesday, February 12th and closes Wednesday, February 19th. Please see the summer school guidebook, posted on the summer school website, for course and course request information. New this year: The Art of Cooking, and multi-week cooking enrichment class in the new Advanced Culinary Lab. See page 7 of the guidebook!

Parents and students are invited to Aurora Medical Center - Summit’s second annual Career Exploration Fair on Thursday, March 6th, 2025, from 4:00 - 7:00pm. Students will find clinical and non-clinical departments represented with lots of interactive displays. They will be able to hear directly from experts from those departments to learn first-hand about careers in health care. There will be a few local universities on-site as well, and volunteer opportunities will be highlighted. This is a drop-in event, so no RSVP is required. To apply for the ACT fee waiver program, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Be currently enrolled in high school in the 11th or 12th grade.

• Be testing in the United States, US territories, or Puerto Rico.

• Meet one or more of the indicators of economic need listed below:

• Enrolled in a federal free or reduced-price lunch program at school, based on US Department of Agriculture (USDA) income levels.

• Enrolled in a program for the economically disadvantaged (for example, a federally funded program such as GEAR UP or Upward Bound). Note: If the student participates in a program, but is not economically disadvantaged, they are not eligible for a fee waiver.

• Resides in a foster home, is a ward of the state, or is homeless.

• Family receives low-income public assistance or lives in federally subsidized public housing.

• Family’s total annual income is at or below USDA levels for free or reduced-price lunches on the USDA Food and Nutrition Service website.

Early College Credit Program (ECCP) allows a student in grades 9-12 to apply to enroll in a UW System institution or a participating private/nonprofit institution of higher education (IHE), to take one or more courses up to 18 credits, for which the student may earn high school credit and post-secondary credit. Students must meet certain criteria. For information about ECCP in the UW System, please click here. For information about ECCP in the WAICU (Private Colleges & Universities), please click here. The deadline for submitting completed ECCP applications for Fall Semester 2025 is March 1, 2025. Completed applications can be turned in to your School Counselor.

Start College Now allows a student in grades 11-12 to apply to enroll in a Wisconsin Technical College, to take one or more courses up to 18 credits, for which the student may earn high school credit and post-secondary credit. Students must meet certain criteria. For information on Start College Now, please click here. For information about Start College Now and Waukesha County Technical College please click here. The deadline for submitting completed Start College Now applications for Fall Semester 2025 is March 1, 2025. Completed applications can be turned in to your School Counselor. Students cannot be enrolled in both ECCP and Start College Now at the same time.

Scholarships are continuously updated and added to our MHS scholarship website throughout the academic year for our 12th grade students. Currently there are several posted that are due in less than one month. Please consider reviewing each of these and applying. If you need any support with your application or have any questions you can stop into Student Services to work with Mrs. Knapp!

What: ASAP is a tutoring program for Freshman students which monitors student progress, reduces student failures, and increases communication among teachers, parents, administrators, guidance Counselors and support staff.

Why: We want students to be successful. A referral to the program is not necessary in order to attend the After School Academic Program but a referral form can be found on the School Website under the Parents & Students Tab under Academic Resources. Students are welcome to get help any week it works in their schedule.

At times, students have items delivered at school by parents for pick-up (backpacks, lunch, etc.). Please drop the items off with the Attendance Office at Door #1.

Recently, we have had a few students order Doordash and have it delivered. This can be disruptive to the school and we cannot ensure the food gets to the students. Additionally, it is really expensive!

We know that regular school attendance is a priority for students.

• Our goal is that all students have a daily attendance rate higher than 95%, as we know it strongly impacts student achievement and success.
• Additionally, we want ALL MHS students to be College, Career, and Community ready. We know that a 95% attendance rate prepares our students to be successful beyond high school.
• Please reach out to Ms. Jen Gigl (jennifer.gigl@muskegonorway.org) for support if your student is struggling with attendance. We are here for you!

• Report absences before 8:30 am.

• Report absences by logging into Infinite Campus, either through the Campus Parent App or from a computer.

• Once logged in, click More, then Absence Requests.

• Select your student(s).

• Select the reason from the drop-down.

• Select the absence type.

• Select the date(s).

• Add Comments.

• Click Submit

• Safety at MHS:
• Safety is very important at MHS. One of our priorities is keeping all doors secure. Please have a conversation with your student about keeping doors closed (they should never be propped open!).
• Additionally, students should not allow anyone in doors as all students and visitors should enter through the designated doors.
• Finally, if something seems out of place, please report it immediately to the administration or the SRO.
• New Drivers:
• This message is especially for newer drivers and if this is your first winter driving.
• In addition to the tips on the poster below, an important reminder is that Wisconsin law requires you to use your headlights during periods of limited visibility. Limited visibility means that objects are not visible from a distance of 500 feet from your vehicle (i.e., when it's snowing, raining, or foggy).
• Drive safely!
• *Please take a minute to reinforce the need to be careful in school parking lots in terms of speed, honoring stop signs, and being extra attentive. We have lots of traffic and new drivers. We want to keep everyone safe. :)

• NEW FOR SEMESTER 2 2024-25- DOOR 29:
• Previously we had allowed students to enter the building during the morning passing periods at door 16. We will be moving this process, which is outlined below, to door 29 (Math door) off of the PAC parking lot. We have identified that there is more parking available in this lot during the times in which students are arriving at school.
• For the second semester we will be allowing students to enter MHS through Door 29 (Math Doors) during morning passing periods to help students get to class on time:
• Door 29 will be open during passing periods between 1st and 2nd, 2nd and 3rd, and 3rd and 4th hours.
• The doors will ONLY be open during the five-minute passing period window. A staff member will be monitoring students entering the building during this time.
