Y5s Embrace Social & Emotional Learning
In our Young Five's program, we are able to spend time with students to further develop their emotional and social skills using our Second Step Program. Children learn about taking care of themselves emotionally and learn about having empathy for others.
The program supports our young learners by helping them relate to real-life circumstances and stories using puppets and realistic photos. Many times, they will say to each other, "That happened to me!" or "Oh, that's a good idea!" It's rewarding to witness a little one's understanding of social interactions and outcomes that are positive

The Snow is Here!
The snow has arrived, which is great fun for the kids at recess! This means students will need proper snow gear to be permitted to play in the snow at recess. Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather and with boots and snow pants each day.
In addition, please take time to label each and every item to help keep our lost and found to a minimum. All items that have a name on them will be returned the same day they are lost.
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 25 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10+ degrees.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons
Help Make a Difference
Do you know how much water a family of four uses every day in the United States? Not 50 gallons, not 100 gallons, but 400 gallons! Fortunately, there are many things we can do to save water!
Use less hot water
o It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Install a flowing shower head.
o Wash a full load of clothes in cold or warm water.
o Make sure the dishwasher is full instead of running ½ a load.
o Wear clothes and use towels more than once.
Use less water
o By turning the water off when you brush your teeth in the morning & night.
o Take shorter showers - see if you can keep your shower to five minutes – try timing yourself next time you hop in. Cutting your shower time by two minutes daily will save you 12 hours a year!
o Take a shower instead of a bath. A shower only uses 10 to 25 gallons, while a bath takes up to 70 gallons!
o Avoid running the tap water until it’s cold by keeping a reusable water bottle in the fridge.
Fix Leaks
o Try this fun experiment – put some food coloring in your toilet’s water tank and if the color shows up in the bowl without flushing you have a leak!
o Leaking taps, shower heads, toilets, and hoses can waste gallons of water every day.
Many simple actions have wider impacts than we realize. Even if you do just one thing each day to contribute to your home’s water conservation, you’re helping! Thank you!

Twain Parking Lot Reminders
The North lot is NOT a drop-off/ pick-up zone. It is for parking only. We MUST keep the loop open for busses and emergency vehicles. This rule applies to everyone, so please be cooperative and follow it.
The large, central lot has two lanes: a drop-off/ pick-up lane on the outside of the loop and a driving lane on the inside.
Please note: Drivers MAY NOT get out of your car while in the outside drop-off/ pick-up lane. Your students must exit to the outside of the loop, and drivers must not exit the car to walk students up or pick them up. If you have younger children who need to be walked up or picked up at the door, you MUST park your car in one of the lots or on the street.
Smoking and pets are not permitted on school grounds. Please leave your pets at home for the safety and comfort of all of our students and families.
Please do NOT swear on school grounds. We are trying to set a positive example for behavior for our Twain Comets, and shouting and swearing at other drivers does not set the right example for our kids. We ask our students to be respectful, organized, cooperative, kind, and safe, and we expect those behaviors to be modeled by our parents, too.
