We're excited to share some fantastic news! Starting this academic year Ms. Pilotzi, our school counselor, will be delivering Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons as a vital component of our tier 1 curriculum in every classroom. These lessons will foster emotional intelligence, resilience, and interpersonal skills, helping our students thrive both academically and personally. The counselor will be visiting classrooms at least once a month, ensuring that our students receive the valuable guidance they need to navigate their social and emotional development successfully. We believe these lessons will make a significant difference in our students' lives, and we look forward to the positive impact they will have on our school community.

This month’s lessons have been the following:

First Grade: Personal Space/How to be Assertive

The TUPE program provides funding for programs in grades four through twelve through a competitive application process for tobacco-specific student instruction, reinforcement activities, special events, and intervention and cessation programs for students. All LEAs that are certified as having a fully implemented tobacco-free school district board policy are eligible to apply for funding. Programs are locally developed, but they are expected to align with the federal Principles of Effectiveness, the recommended California guidelines for tobacco prevention in the Health Framework for California Public Schools

Hueneme Elementary School District is part of the TUPE Grant.

Purpose/Objectives

The purpose of the TUPE program is to reduce youth tobacco use by helping young people make healthful tobacco-related decisions through tobacco-specific, research-validated educational instruction and activities that build knowledge as well as social skills and youth development assets. Collaboration with community-based tobacco control programs is an integral part of program planning. The school, parents, and the larger community must be involved in the program so that students will be aware of a cohesive effort and concern for their health and, consequently, their ability to succeed in school.

"The presentation today was very informative and engaging. I was shocked to learn about the equivalency of cigarettes to a small vaping device and how much nicotine is in them. It is astounding!!! Another interesting fact was the number of different types of toxins found in these devices. We know they have toxins, but to see just how many is mind blowing! I also liked the slides that talked about."

Leader in Me® is a whole-school transformation model and process developed in partnership with educators that empowers students with the leadership and life skills they need to thrive in the 21st century. It is based on principles and practices of personal, interpersonal and organizational effectiveness, and upon the powerful premise that every child possesses unique strengths and has the ability to be a leader.

Leader in Me helps students learn how to become self-reliant, take initiative, plan ahead, set and track goals, do their homework, prioritize their time, manage their emotions, be considerate of others, express their viewpoint persuasively, resolve conflicts, find creative solutions, value differences, and live a balanced life. The process helps students develop the skills and self-confidence they need to lead their lives and succeed in school and beyond.

Our entire staff:,classified and teachers, are being trained to help implement the curriculum to ALL Sunkist students.

Our students in grades 3, 4 and 5 were presented with: “Say YES to Success!” assembly on Friday October 27th. It is a Growth mindset and goal-setting assembly that addresses the strategies which lead to success in school and in life. This elementary school assembly program was presented by the popular Razzle Bam Boom duo. Mark & Obediah. During the show, they use the important success-related terms “Goals, Retrying, Excellence, Attention, and Training”, which spells the acronym “G.R.E.A.T.”.

Students left the presentation with a new sense of motivation to work and try their best in class. Following the assembly show, students will be in a good frame of mind to set academic goals with their teachers and/or review specific test preparation strategies.
