One of the cornerstones of Avoca School District's Portrait of a Graduate, and focus for the 2024-2025 school year is
"Socially Grounded: Developing healthy relationships with self and others, rooted in respect, empathy, integrity, and justice." Each new school year our staff and students acclimate one another to a new classroom community which includes new peers, personalities, and routines. As we prepare to turn the calendar page to October, we'll also be leveling up our relationships and focusing on how we can support one another and improve our Avoca West community as well.
October is Bullying Prevention Month and is a time when each grade will receive explicit, grade-level specific, principal-led lessons where students will learn to:
- Recognize when bullying is happening
- Report bullying to a trusted adult
- Refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or to others
- Be a bystander who stands up and is part of the solution to bullying
This is hard, heart work for our students as they are immersed in the daily ups and downs here at school. Students will also bring home simple, fun activities called Home Links that will help our caregivers understand what our students are learning about at school. They will also give students another chance to practice skills and to open up dialogue at home.
