GMS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER APRIL 5, 2024
Happy Friday Wolf Pack Families!
We officially started Marking Period 4 this week. Please take some time this weekend to review your student's MP3 grades in Skyward Family Access. Consider having a conversation of where they have excelled and where they can improve. The gradebooks reset for MP4 and this is an awesome opportunity for students to set new goals and finish the school year strong!
April is a busy time of the year with mandated testing at all grade levels, sports, after school enrichment activities and honors assemblies. Please see the calendar below for more information on the first few weeks of April. Please note that April 17 is an early release day for our 6th and 7th grade students. 8th grade students will remain in school to take the PSAT and will be released at the normal time of 3pm.
Wishing you all a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Stuart Riley

Solar Eclipse
On Monday, April 8, 2024, at approximately 3:18 p.m., a solar eclipse will be visible in our area. This celestial event provides a unique opportunity for learning and exploration.
In preparation for the eclipse, the school district has taken steps to ensure the safety of our students and staff. I am pleased to inform you that the school district has purchased eclipse-safe glasses for all students and staff. These glasses will allow for a safe viewing experience for those who wish to participate in observing this extraordinary event.
It's important to emphasize the significance of using proper eye protection when viewing a solar eclipse. While eclipses are awe-inspiring, looking directly at the sun without approved eye protection can cause serious damage to your eyes. Many of our students will be on their way home from school during the eclipse. Please speak to your student about how to view the eclipse safely.

Super Star Staff Award
Hello Walled Lake Families,
Support your favorite WLCSD Staff member with a nomination for a Super Star Staff Award from the Foundation For Excellence! Each $10 nomination gives the staff member a chance at one of two $500 cash prizes from the FFE and the Walled Lake Schools Federal Credit Union. The funds raised from the nominations will help the Foundation For Excellence give more money back to our teachers and students.
The Foundation For Excellence (FFE) is a non-profit organization that works with Walled Lake Schools to provide grants for classrooms throughout the district. These funds support extra literacy tools like decodable phonics books, STEM equipment for classrooms, additional instruments for music rooms, social emotional support tools, and many other things.
Nominations cost $10 and the staff member (teacher, administrator, custodian, parapro, bus driver, etc) will be given a certificate with a personal message from you as to why they are so special. They will also be added to a drawing for one of two $500 gifts that will be presented during Staff Appreciation Week (May 6 - 10).

Ramadan
The first day of fasting for the holy month of Ramadan will likely be Monday, March 11 or Tuesday, March 12, depending on the sighting of the new moon. Ramadan is determined by the Islamic lunar calendar, which begins with the sighting of the crescent moon. During the holy month of Ramadan, observing Muslims fast from just before the sunrise prayer, Fajr, to the sunset prayer, Maghrib. Our GMS observing Muslim students may go to the media center during their lunch period if they would prefer. For those who celebrate, we wish you a meaningful month of Ramadan.
DC Trip Update
Students who needs to take medication (prescribed and over-the-counter) must have a district medication form completed. These forms were distributed this week in social studies classes and can be found here (overview information & form). Except in extenuating circumstances, the completed forms with a physician signature are due back to Mr. Yu by Monday, April 1st.
The DC Trip Spring Parent Meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 17 at 6:30pm in the GMS Cafeteria. The purpose of this meeting is to go over trip expectations, packing information, review the itinerary, meet chaperones, and ask final questions. More information to come. Students will have a pre-departure meeting the day prior to the trip during school.
Please contact Mr. Yu (TorryYu@wlcsd.org) with any additional questions you may have.
FREE Before and After School Tutoring

Weekend Food Program-Hospitality House
Supporting and caring for our students in any way possible is our mission at GMS. Geisler MS recently partnered with Hospitality House Food Pantry in Walled Lake to bring the Weekend Food Program to our students. If you are a family that could use a little extra help with meals on the weekends, please let your child’s counselor know. Your child’s name will be held confidential. The Weekend Food Program would provide approximately 6 meals and snacks for your student on the weekend. The food would be distributed to your student in a discreet bag or backpack for them to take home each Friday. There is no cost to participate in the program. To optimize a student’s success at school starts with students having enough to eat. Please see the attached flyer for more information about the Weekend Food Program. If you are interested in having your student participate, please contact your student’s counselor Ann Marie Rutherford (Counselor for 6th Grade Students (A-L) and ALL 8th Grade Students) annmarierutherford@wlcsd.org or 248-956-2917 or Amanda Hart (6th Grade Students (M-Z) and ALL 7th Grade Students) amandahart@wlcsd.org or 248-956-2916.
