A Great Place To Learn
Dear Families,
I hope everyone's ready for a great weekend. On Thursday we finished our first week of state testing. Students in grades 3-4 will complete their sessions on Tuesday. Fifth grade will have one more test for science on 5/14. I'm sure our students are going to shine. Thank you for helping prepare your children for testing.
On Thursday evening, please join your child at open house. Open house is a time for your child to walk you through their class and show off some of their great work. While we will have Cascabels and Cowabunga Ice Cream Truck on site, please understand we do not have supervision for your children and children should be with you while you're in class. In addition, because of the importance of this night, and the fact we do not have supervision, we are asking that students do not play on the field and play structures. We appreciate your support in this, it's going to be a fantastic evening for your child to shine :)

4:30 - Taco Truck & Cowabunga Ice Cream Opens
5:00 - 6:00 - Classes Open

Celebrating Diversity @ AME
At lunch, staff member Marilu and several parents worked with our cafeteria to bring us the taste of Mexico. Later today, our students and staff were treated to a Ballet folklórico performance by Raíces Mexicanas. Ballet folklórico is a traditional cultural dance that emphasize local folk culture with ballet.
LEGO Month in the Library
Students have been challenged to work collaboratively and individually to design and build various projects including bridges, boats that float, spinning tops, and rainbows. The culminating week of LEGO Month was game week-marble mazes, dominoes, Concentration, finger football, tic-tac-toe, and more.
All students who brought in a LEGO model to display in the library are asked to pick them up to take home! Thank you.

A REMINDER ABOUT OUR SPRINGTIME DRESS CODE
- Tank tops are cool and comfy and may be worn at school. Please make sure they have “lasagna” straps (at least 2” wide) and not “spaghetti” straps.
- Airy sport jerseys and girls’ racer-back tops should be layered with an under or over shirt so not too much skin is showing around the underarm area.
- Shorts and skirts must reach at least the end of your fingertips when arms are at your side.
- To prevent trips and falls, all shoes must have a strap around the heel.
- Attire must cover the stomach.
Volunteer Tea
"It takes a village to raise a child" This proverb rings true at AME. Each year we celebrates the volunteers who dedicate so much time and energy to Michelson. This includes our MPC Executive Board Members, committee leads, family volunteers, master gardeners, former teachers and many others who help educate our students. Our celebration was fittingly held on May Day in the school garden. The staff served amazing mocktails and scrumptious treats. It was an afternoon filled with smiles and conversation with those that we hold in such high esteem. The ceremony was capped off by recognizing our MPC board, Sarah W, Brook H, Tara C, Erin and Jessica M. In addition, the Glanville's were recognized for their commitment to CIAB and Linsey D. was honored as the AME volunteer of the year. Thank you volunteers! and thank you to Michelle Wright for coordinating this beautiful event.

Test Taking Tips
Test Taking Tips for Parents & Students Preparing a student for State Testing
- Ensure your child gets an ample, normal amount of sleep the night before the test.
- Your child should eat a nutritious and filling breakfast. Avoid high sugar cereals which can make the student hyper and/or unfocused. MPC is also providing snacks.
- Make sure your child is on time on the day of testing
- If you child is sick please contact Judy.
Working with Students who are anxious about testing – For Parents
- Reinforce to your child that as long as they worked hard and did their absolute best you will be proud of them.
- Have your child visualize success. Encourage them to rehearse what it will feel like to do your best.
- Work with them to focus on breathing. Stress is often caused by insufficient oxygen to the brain. Work with your child to take time before the test begins to take a number of deep, cleansing breaths, exhaling slowly. Focusing on breathing by taking some time when stress levels rise helps to focus the mind during testing.
- Plan for a fun outing or treat for your child after the test has been completed.
- Keep a positive attitude about testing in general around your child and emphasize their ability to demonstrate what they have learned.
Test Taking Tips for Students General
- Answer all questions, even if do not know the answer.
- Use all of the time allotted to you.
- Perform opposite operations. For example if your problem involves multiplication check your work by dividing in reverse.
- Anticipate the answer before looking at your answer options. Students can physically cover the answer with their hand to see if he/she can answer it first.
- Eliminate highly implausible answers (most multiple choice tests will have at least two “distracter” items that are unrelated to the questions).
- Be aware of words like “always,” “never,” “only,” “must,” and “completely.” Response options containing these words may be correct, but are usually distracters as their will usually be exceptions to extreme words such as these.
- Be cautious about changing your answer to a multiple choice question without a good reason. Usually, your first “guess” or intuition is more likely to be correct than later ones.
- If one of the items is an “All of the Above” option and you know that at least one of the other options is incorrect/false then you can eliminate the “All of the Above” option as well.
EDUCATIONAL PLACEMENT CONFERENCE 2024-2025
In an effort to optimize school-wide class compositions, Albert Michelson Elementary School has adopted the following parameters for the 2024-2025 academic school year in the area of educational placement conferences. A parent conference and form signed by parent(s) will be required in order for information to be considered.
Teachers work together to strategically develop class lists prior to administrative review. When compiling class lists, Administration will consider scheduling of support and enrichment opportunities, educational balance, and social issues so that all particular grade level configurations are as balanced as possible for each class. Only then will compelling parent information relative to specific educational needs be considered as Administration deems appropriate for balanced classroom make-up. Please be advised that, as a result of possible retirements and transfers within the school district, it is quite likely that some teachers who are currently in a particular classroom may not be assigned to the same grade level the following school year. Please contact Mr. O’Geen if you have questions.

Murphys Creek Theater Summer on Stage scholarship
VUSD wants to let you know about some amazing student opportunities in theater coming up this summer!
OPPORTUNITY 1:
"Summer on Stage" is a once-in-a-summer - perhaps in a lifetime - acting opportunity for your 9-17 year-old child!
Vallecito Union School District will sponsor up to 9 of our students (must be age 9 or older) who commit to participating in the entire 10am-4pm, 6-week session of the theater camp at Murphys Creek Theater (June 10-July 21). During "Summer on Stage," students will gain confidence in acting, voice control, technical aspects, dance and movement - and even stage combat - all while producing a full-length performance of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream!"
For consideration of eligibility to receive a VUSD scholarship to the "Summer on Stage" camp, please reply back to me via this email by May 1. Consideration will be given to those who are first to respond to this email and commit to the full camp session, until all scholarships are used. State funding for K-6 Extended Learning Opportunity Program (ELOP) makes this limited underwriting possible. Beyond the scholarships, full-priced openings are available by contacting Murphys Creek Theater: murphyscreektheatre.org For further description of the "Summer on Stage" program, please see the attached fliers.
OPPORTUNITY 2:
Alternatively, if your family doesn't have the full block of time to commit to "Summer on Stage," but your child would still like a chance to act, Missoula Children's Theater returns for a separate 5-day summer opportunity in the production of "Gulliver's Travels," open free of charge to all EdVenture Time-enrolled VUSD students in grades K-8, the week of June 17-21 on the Michelson School stage! Slots for this opportunity will first be given to students who did not participate in the March Missoula Children's Theater at Michelson last month, but parents of all K-8 students who are receiving this notice may respond on the survey by May 15: Missoula Children's Theater June 17-21 (google.com) We'll give consideration to the first 60 qualifying students!
We look forward to helping our students discover and develop new talents that build skill and confidence through active engagement in our extended learning opportunities!
