Updates from U-32

Principal's Update
Dear U-32 Students, Families, and Caregivers,
On Tuesday, we ended our four day phase into school with an opening circle led by Pep on the track. It was the first time we have seen our entire school community in one place this year and it was truly a joyful and student-led space. Students practiced cheers both in TA and morning assemblies, they represented their classes well and, after welcoming the class of 2030 and congratulating the class of 2025, we did one big wave together to kick off the school year.
Our themes of belonging and inclusion are continuing to build in classes and TA and the leadership team and I have been visiting TAs in 7th grade and have been impressed with the level of connection and support students are showing each other in such a short amount of time. The teacher advisor system is a way of making a larger place smaller and more personalized. In one TA they created jars of gratitude, reflection, excitement and challenge to collect throughout the school year. In another TA they ended their time playing soft frisbee around a circle (both a talking piece and a tool for play). These spaces are built intentionally and responsively.
Thank you for attending our Open House yesterday. It was great to see students in attendance and the connections you all have as a community. I look forward to seeing many of you tonight at our first home football game.
Best,
Becca

Athletics Update & Football Game Attendance Reminder
Good evening Raider Nation!
The fall sports season is well underway as most of our high school sports teams have played their first games and our middle school teams will join them starting at the end of next week!
We look forward to hosting our first home football game of the year tonight as we take on Bellows Falls at 7 p.m. under the lights on Main Stadium Field!
As a reminder, all middle school students that attend must be accompanied by an adult and actively supervised by that individual while they are at the game and on campus.
No students may stay on campus until the game. All students must leave campus and come back for the game (this includes middle and high school students).
Night football games and soccer games are some of our favorite community events we host all year. We encourage everyone to come out and attend while repping the Raider blue and white from the hill!
Tickets for football games are $5 for adults and $3 for students/youth and will be cash only so please come prepared!
We want to make sure that all of our sporting events are an exciting and enjoyable atmosphere for everyone.
We look forward to seeing you this evening and go Raiders!
-Becca and Derek
Do you pick up your student after school? Please read this important update
We continue to have problems with getting our buses on to campus at the end of the day because both the parking lot entrance and Gallison Hill Rd are being blocked by cars picking up students.
When you arrive on campus, please do not block the entrance or driving lanes into the parking lot.
If you cannot pull up beside the curb (marked in green on the map), we ask that you pull into the parking lot to pick up.
The yellow areas AND Gallison Hill cannot be blocked and we asked that there is no stopping or standing in these areas.
Please pull into the parking lot and find a parking spot

Welcome back to Language Services!
My name is Erica Smith, and I am the speech-language pathologist at U-32. I look forward to meeting new faces and seeing those I remember last year! I was grateful to meet some of you at the Open House last night.
I am instituting something new with language services this year: Carryover Practice. This may look like "homework"; however, this will not be graded and is very low stakes in terms of the workload. While the tasks may seem "easy" to you or the student, there are skills that I am looking to build for this population.
- Executive functioning: This was our main focus last year, but it is a continual skill for middle and high school development. Specifically, it involves completing a task and handing it in. While most teachers do this digitally, I do it physically.
- Following Directions is a skill that extends far beyond the classroom. Whether it's understanding appliance manuals, filling out forms, or completing applications, following directions accurately is crucial. It's not just about avoiding consequences but about ensuring successful outcomes.
- Collaboration: Students are encouraged to seek help and work together on these tasks. I may assign different worksheets to the same group of students; if they collaborate, they can ask each other questions and clarify the tasks. This fosters a supportive learning environment and works on one of the transitional skills in our school's learning targets and standards.
This new practice is being introduced on a trial basis. At the end of the semester (January), I will check in to gather feedback and assess its effectiveness. This ensures that we are all part of the process and can make necessary adjustments for the best learning experience.

Stage 32 Winter Musical Participation Sign Up
Hello U-32,
This year Stage 32, the High School Theater Program, is doing a joint musical with Montpelier High School (many of you know what this musical is but I'm not officially allowed to announce it until October 18. Don't worry, it's going to be amazing!). The Stage 32 winter musical is open to full time students in grades 9-12. Early college students are also eligible. Athletes, please get involved - we will work with your schedule.
If you are interested in being part of tech, costumes, or an actor, please fill out this form so that I can add you to an email list and send you the information you need. Even if you're on the fence, fill this out - it is not a commitment, it just shows interest.
- Our performance dates are January 23, 24, 25, 31, 30, and February 1.
- Tech and Costumes will start in mid September.
- Auditions are after October 18 - specific date TBD.
- Actors who wish to audition will have 2-3 meetings before the October auditions.
For questions, please come see me in the Theater Office (located past the events lobby bathrooms behind the theater) or send an email: egalliganbaldwin@u32.org.

College Fair Information
U-32 College Fair in the U-32 Atrium on October 8th from 12:00pm-1:45pm
NEACAC Fair Saint Michael's College Tarrant Center
October 9th- 6:00pm-8:00pm over 200 colleges/universities attend
Things to Do Before Attending the College Fair
1. Look over the list of college fair participants. Use Naviance College Search feature to find colleges that match your interests. Choose the colleges you most want to find out more about. If you have time, research those colleges by checking their Web sites.
2. Write up a short list of questions to ask admission representatives. To compare several schools, plan on asking the same questions at each table. The questions you ask should be unique to your interests and not easily found in standard college materials:
- What are the two or three most popular majors? (This can give you a good idea of the main interests of a majority of the students.)
- Ask about the availability and quality of the program(s) or major(s) you are interested in. What are the opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research with faculty members or to do internships? What courses would you take your first year in a particular major?
- Students who are undecided should ask about what services and support are available to help them explore various majors.
- Ask about: extracurricular activities, what kinds of students the college is looking for, what percentage of students receive financial aid (not including loans), are merit scholarships available, how do they look at AP scores, and other concerns unique to your interests and situation.
3. Make sure you have the following supplies:
- A small notebook and pen or a handheld device with your list of colleges and questions
4. Print up a sheet of self-stick address labels. Include (in small font, as much as you can of the following): your name, address, phone number, e-mail address, high school, year of graduation, intended major(s), and any extracurricular activities you’re interested in. At the fair, slap the address labels on the college information cards to save you time in filling out the same information over and over at each college. You may want to create an email account just for college purposes that you and your parents/guardians can access. You can delete the account after you choose which college to attend. Thus not cluttering your inbox!
5. After visiting the fair, jot down your impressions of some of the most interesting colleges you saw as well as some of the answers they gave to your questions. Try to do this as soon as possible, while your impressions are still fresh.
