Teachers visit Atlanta, historic civil rights movement sites
Three Red Wing Public Schools teachers explored “The Problem of the Color Line: Atlanta Landmarks and Civil Rights History” last summer, having applied and been selected to attend the National Endowment of the Humanities Landmark Workshop in Atlanta.
High school teachers Kristin Bray and Kari Mathies and middle school teacher Julie Martin have been incorporating what they learned into their lessons and lives. Monday, Jan. 20, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and the three educators shared their thoughts on the civil rights movement leader’s legacy.
“We spent the week with approximately 30 educators from around the country deep-diving into learning about the civil rights movement in the nation, specifically Atlanta,” Bray said.
Many Atlanta landmarks aided in their learning throughout the week, the teachers said. They were given opportunities to learn about MLK's work by visiting his family’s home, his churches, his alma mater Morehouse College and places in Atlanta where he worked and led others toward equality.
“The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park was a really neat visit with so much to see and learn from as well. It’s a hard experience to summarize because it was so huge,” Bray said.

How this opportunity came about
Each year the National Endowment for the Humanities posts a long list of summer learning opportunities for teachers. Landmark Workshop grants help teachers continue their learning and connect with educators from around the country.
“I feel like as educators we have to keep learning and finding ways to connect with our students, families and communities,” Bray said. “This was a great way for me to expand my knowledge of the civil rights movement and gain real-life experiences that will help me in my classroom- especially in regards to black history.”
Martin agreed. “I was especially moved by going to the house where Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta lived. We walked around in the rooms where one of the greatest people of the 20th century lived and strategized with others who brought about significant change in our country,” she said. “He didn’t want to own a home, but his wife insisted, so he put the house in her name. It had a garage door opener, which wasn’t common in 1963, so he could drive in and lessen the risk. At this point, he had already been stabbed. King knew his life was in danger, but he put the work above his own life and kept going.”
After learning about Martin Luther King Jr., grade 8 art students created cards to uplift and thank staff as part of MLK Day of Service.
