Scholarship for Tot Wendell and Bacus
The Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation has the privilege of administering the Nebraskans of World War II Scholarship and the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Award. Both the Scholarship and Award are made available to qualifying seniors from high schools which encompass the hometowns of the twenty-two Nebraska sailors who died at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, and remain entombed on the USS Arizona. To maximize available funds and provide a simpler process, we are awarding both the Nebraskans of World War II Scholarships and the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Awards within the same process.
For the 2024-25 school year, the Nebraskans of World War II Scholarship Fund will award up to five (5) $1,700 scholarships. The Pearl Harbor Remembrance Award Fund will award up to two (2) $750 awards to students who apply for but do not receive a Nebraskans of World War II Scholarship.
Attached are the application, media release and the poster explaining the program.
Qualifications for the Scholarship and Award are the same and are listed on the WWII Scholarship application form and poster. Applications must be sent electronically by the applicant to the Foundation at squambusch@nshsf.org by February 28, 2025. The Scholarship Committee will review the applications, and the winners will be notified by April 15, 2024. The application form explains the criteria and supporting material requirements along with the WW II Scholarship poster.
The Foundation is pleased to make these scholarships and awards available as a tribute to the many Nebraskans who served their country during World War II. The sacrifices of these brave men and women made it possible for our students to grow up with the freedom they enjoy today. Thank you for helping us share this information with your students.

The focus of Lion’s Clubs in general is to help people that have adversity from visual impairment, hearing impairment, childhood cancer, diabetes, and hunger. Therefore, our award would be to a student that has such adversity OR has demonstrated passion to helping others with that sort of diversity. Financial need of the student is also a factor.
In addition to the typical application form, we want the student to write a letter to our committee explaining who they are, how they fit into the criteria above, explain what they would like to do for the rest of their life, their field of study, possible job interests, possible charity interests possible hobby interests, and how they would use this scholarship money. The application forms are attached. There is a portion of the form to be filled out by the student’s guidance counselor, a portion filled out by a high school faculty member, and a portion by a parent or guardian. And of course we want to see the student’s high school transcript.
At this time the Club’s budget allows for a $2,000.00 scholarship to be presented shortly after high school graduation.
See the attached application forms for more information.
Omaha Westside Lions Club “Bob Elsasser” Scholarship
The Omaha Westside Lions Club is a local Omaha Nebraska chapter of the Lions Clubs International. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Lions are best known for fighting blindness, diabetes, and childhood cancer, but we also volunteer for many kinds of community projects – including caring for the environment, feeding the hungry, aiding seniors and the disabled. For example, Lions give sight by conducting vision screenings; Lions serve youth through youth camps and scholarships; Lions are active. Our motto is “We Serve” doing whatever is necessary to help our local communities.
Lt. Col. Robert Elsasser, USAF (retired) was a long-time member of our Club and passed away in July 2023. He was very interested in this scholarship program and was on the scholarship committee for many years. His life was spent serving the community in many ways as Lions do. Bob left some memorial money to the Club to help fund a student scholarship.
We at the Omaha Westside Lions Club are offering a $2,000.00 Scholarship to a high school senior that will be graduating and moving on to a 4-year college, a 2-year community college, or a trade apprenticeship, or vocational college.
We intend to award a scholarship to a student that is affected by various disabilities such as blindness, diabetes, childhood cancer, and other disabilities, OR to a student that exhibits the desire and work to help others that have such disabilities. Please see the application on the following pages for more information to be considered for this award. High School Senior Finalists will be interviewed in person by the scholarship committee. The award will be made to the winning student and their parents or guardian at a regularly scheduled Lions Club Meeting. At that meeting, the Club would like to hear more information from the student about their aspirations, goals, motivations, and future life plans. The student would become an honorary member of our Club for the duration of their post high school education.
Carefully review the following pages for the application. There are parts to be filled out by the student, the high school guidance counselor, a high school faculty member, and the parent or guardian. We also need an official high school transcript of the student.
The scholarship award money will be paid directly to the student upon proof of enrollment in the post high school education program. The scholarship award money must be used to pay for tuition, room and board, books, or other educational expenses.

Hagan Scholarship Foundation
The Hagan Scholarship provides up to $7,500 each semester for up to 8 consecutive semesters, workshops to learn important life skills not typically covered in the college curriculum, funds to purchase college essentials, an HSF Schwab Brokerage Account to manage in order to learn how to invest, funds to study and travel abroad, and the opportunity to apply for a Hagan Graduate Scholarship good for up to four additional semesters in college.
- The disbursement amount will be determined each semester by HSF by taking the Total Cost of Attendance including tuition, fees, room, board, books, supplies, personal and transportation costs; then, deducting the total dollar amount of ALL scholarships, awards, grants, waivers, Federal and institution provided work-study, and one-half of the recipient’s FAFSA SAI. Parents are not required to pay the SAI, it is used only to determine the disbursement amount.
- The disbursement amount will be adjusted each semester to offset the expiration or loss of other scholarships, awards, grants, waivers, Federal or institution provided work-study, and changes in the recipient’s SAI.
- The Hagan Scholarship is renewable for up to seven additional consecutive semesters if the recipient fulfills the scholarship criteria and mandatory workshop responsibilities. Funding of the Hagan Scholarship will cease upon graduation from college or after earning 140 credit hours, whichever first occurs. In such event, recipients will continue managing their HSF Schwab Account and fulfill all other scholarship criteria until their Award Year Class graduates college. To receive funding after graduation or after earning 140 credit hours, recipients must apply for and be awarded a Hagan Graduate Scholarship.
- First year recipients will receive $2,000 after being awarded a Hagan Scholarship in order to purchase essential items for college not covered by the scholarship; items such as a computer, printer, cell phone, clothing, school supplies, and bedding.
- Second year recipients will open a Personal Schwab Brokerage Account. After the account is opened HSF will deposit $100 in the account and provide each recipient with an HSF Schwab Brokerage Account to manage until graduation. HSF funds managed by each recipient will be $10,000 the second year, $15,000 the third year, and $20,000 the fourth year.
- Third year recipients who have achieved a 3.50 CGPA are eligible for an all-expense paid study and travel abroad experience worth up to $8,000. Or the funds can be used to study abroad the second semester of the third year in college.
- Recipients who will graduate college while in the Hagan Scholarship Program can apply for a Hagan Graduate Scholarship the semester prior to graduation, good for up to four additional consecutive semesters to attend graduate school or a professional school receiving up to $7,500 each semester. Recipients must enroll in college as a full-time graduate student no later than the fall semester following the Award of a Hagan Graduate Scholarship.
- Recipients must work 240 hours from January 1 each year until commencement of the fall semester in college. Work can be full-time employment during the summer, part-time work, or a combination of the two. Employment must be regularly scheduled work performed under supervision for compensation.
