BOT Elections - Our Candidates
TAMATI-ELLIFFE, Jeanine
Nāia te hau o Te Ruahikihiki, o Te Pahi anō hoki e rere atu ana - tēnā tātau katoa.
As part of my own journey of reo reclamation, raising my tamariki in te reo Māori, I have become a strong advocate for Te Aho Matua o ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori. Not just as a philosophical base for education, but as the only educational framework that enables us, as iwi Māori and whānau kōrero Māori, to enact mana motuhake in the education system.
I have over 20+ years of governance experience across a range of health, education, reo revitalisation, social change and innovation kaupapa focused on enhancing and elevating te oranga o te iwi Māori. I currently work at the University of Canterbury as Kaihautū Taunaki Kaupapa | Director - Projects and Innovation working to improve and create pathways to tertiary education that are relevant to the needs and aspirations of our whānau, hapū and iwi Māori. As a potential Board Member, I am committed to: improving whānau communication and engagement; continuing the great work of our current board on projects such as exploring funding avenues for new kura vans; extend this further to investigate a more sustainable kura transport plan in recognition of the number of our whānau who live more than 3.2km away from our kura; work with kaimahi, taiohi and wider whānau of our kura to develop a sustainable succession plan for our kura to harness the naturally innovative and creative talent of our tamariki and taiohi, and finds ways to inspire them into education and career pathways that ignite their superpowers, and; explore ways of eliminating barriers to participation for our tamariki, taiohi and their whānau in our kura life and learning - whether that be financial, social or emotional.
Tūwhitia te hopo, mairakatia te akitu!

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi has a beautiful legacy and a bright future. I am inspired by our kaiako and whānau and all of their hard mahi and watching our tamariki thrive in the environment that the kura offers. I have enjoyed watching the kura go from strength to strength and in particular seeing the growth in our wharekura. I am passionate about identit, about place, about mātauranga Māori, about te reo Māori, about mana motuhake.
I am the founder of a Māori consultancy agency NAIA. Our team wanted to be connected to our kura and tamariki so much we have our tari just across the road, with other offices in Wellington and Hamilton. I am also the current Deputy Chair of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori / the Māori Language Commission. For my marae at Wairewa I am driving reo development programmmes and overseeing the development of the master plan that will inform the building / redevelopment activities of our buildings and grounds. My background is in cultural and language revitalisation, strategic planning, philanthropic fund management, supporting organisations to embed values in their day-to-day operations and the advancement of iwi/Māori aspirations. On the personal front I am deeply passionate about toi Māori in all its forms and love to dabble in my spare time.
For Te Whānau Tahi I hope that my skill sets will help support the future build plans for the kura and I would be humbled to join the board to advance the aspirations of the kura on all fronts. Tēnā koutou katoa.

GRAY, Marie
Tēnā koutou e te whānau. Nei rā te mihi maioha ki a koutou katoa.
I am standing for the Poari Matua in 2022. I came on to the Poari in 2019 as a parent representative. We have had a great team. I'm proud of the work the Poari has done to progress the kura rebuild and keep things ticking along especially given the challenges of covid-19. In addition to the Poari, I have been a member of the finance subcommittee, it's not a glamorous role but a key part of the poari's responsibilities.
I have two boys at kura, one in year 4 and one in year 8. My iramutu and moko are also at kura.
Many of you may also know me from my years at kōhanga reo. I was at Te Kōhanga Reo o Te Whānau Tahi for about 9 years and still support the kaupapa. In my time at kōhanga, I held various roles including Secretary, Deputy Chairperson, Chairperson and Administrator.
My current mahi is in conservation, with a focus on restoring native bush to the Port Hills.
I am standing again for the Poari because there is a lot of mahi still to do, especially with the rebuild. I want to do what I can to support the kura, our tamariki, kaimahi and whānau.
Nō reira, papaki ana ngā tai o mihi ki a koutou.

KAMARIERA, Sophie
Poipoia ō tātou pūmanawa,
Poipoia ā tātou tamariki
Poipoia te manawa o te mahuri
Tērā te tupu o te rākau
Tēnā koutou e te whānau - Ko Sophie Kamariera ahau.
I am standing again as a parent representative on the Board, because I want to continue to contribute to the great kura that we have.
My tamariki, Māia and Te Kōwhai are raukura of Te Whānau Tahi. My son, Wai Tākoha, is in Year 13. My husband, Te Hohota teaches Reo Rangatira in Wharekura. I have been fortunate to represent whānau on our Board for a number of years, including leading the board as chairperson for five.
Our kura has faced real challenges in the last couple of years, and this is on-going. Whānau wellbeing, Kaimahi retention, and our own kura COVID response are all important kaupapa that have been a focus of our board. I believe that my current governance experience combined with over 20 years in support roles within the education sector, would add value to the new Board to continue to tackle these kaupapa. I have a strong knowledge of the statutory and legal requirements of running a kura, which is also important on a board.
I have been a part of the ohu which has led the kura rebuild from the beginning, and would really like to see the rebuild through to ensure we keep the MOE accountable and turn our whānau vision into reality.
I am passionate about our kaupapa and the unique opportunity we have to provide quality Māori education for all our ākonga. Our own whānau have benefited and grown over the years in being part of the kura, and I know that what we have at Te Whānau Tahi is something you can’t find anywhere else, which is something we need to hold on to.
If I was re-elected to the Board, I would continue to work hard for our kura and ensure that parent and whānau voice leads the decisions we make, that ultimately impact ākonga success at Te Whānau Tahi.

I am currently a co-opted member on the Poari Matua o Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi. I have been nominated to be elected onto the Poari Matua 2022-2024. My whakapapa to our kura is through our Wharehui that is named after my father Te Aoturoa Roberts. In previous years I have worked at TKKM o Te Whānau Tahi and worked in various roles. Those roles as Kaiako, Tumuaki Tuarua, Kairiwhī Tumuaki, Kaihautū Tikanga me Kawa, which have given me the ability to have a good understanding of the day to day running of the kura from a management and governance perspective. I have a good knowledge of our kura from its humble beginnings to now. I would like to continue contributing to our Kura through not only being an active member of the Kura but also as a Poari Matua member. I would be honoured to continue as a Poari Matua member for Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Whānau Tahi.

TIATIA, Tate
I am a Māmā to three te reo Māori-Gagana Sāmoa-Pākehā speaking tamariki and this has proven to be their unique advantage and what drives me to seek out opportunities to support their future pathways. It’s important to us that they do not have to choose a single pathway, but to be equipped to navigate whatever paths they come across. He ao te rangi ka uhia, mā te huruhuru te manu ka rere ai. Being a second-language learner (of te reo, and a few other languages) myself, it’s important to me that, despite the limits imposed on me, my tamariki are part of a future that values all cultures, embraces diversity and privileges te ao Māori here in Aotearoa. When the kids were at Te Waka Huruhurumanu kohungahunga I got involved in the Board and contributed to fundraising activities to improve the centre. I have experience in Youth Work, Careers Guidance, including having supported the growth of rangatahi participation in waka ama in Waitaha. While raising a whānau I’ve partnered with my husband to run a Small Business enterprise focused on health, wellbeing, and cultural capability. Moving on from Government, and Secondary sectors clocking up over 15 years in the Tertiary Education sector, I’m currently focused on improving the experience for Māori in Tertiary education for both learners and employees. Where the work really happens… how our tamariki can continue to thrive in higher learning and in life while maintaining the philosophy and values of Te Aho Matua. Kia raka te mātau, kia raka te mauī. Our community, the village around us, and the trailblazers before us sustain our desire to continue to believe in a kaupapa Māori founded education experience. We, Jason and I, want to continue the good work of the board, and kura community who have established a legacy we are proud to be part of. Our aim is to provide value-add wherever we go, and I would be stoked to work with a focused and dynamic team with similar drive to give and to grow.
