OBJH FamilyNewsletterWeek of Monday, May 20 - Friday May 24

Dear Families of the Bay,

As we approach the end of the school year, we want to take a moment to thank you for your continued support and dedication. This has been a year full of learning, growth, and achievements, and we couldn't have reached this point without your partnership.

With just a few weeks left, it's crucial that we all work together to ensure a strong finish. Here are a few ways you can help your student make the most of these final days:

Attendance: Encourage regular attendance. Every day counts as we wrap up important lessons and projects.

Engagement: Motivate your child to stay engaged in their studies and participate actively in class.

Support: Provide a quiet and organized space for homework and study. Offer help and encouragement as they prepare for final assessments and complete assignments.

Communication: Stay in touch with teachers and school staff. If there are any concerns or questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

We are so proud of the hard work and perseverance our students have shown this year. Let’s make these last weeks count and celebrate a successful end to the school year.

Thank you once again for your unwavering support.

SUN Bucks (aka Summer EBT) is a new DSHS program that will provide qualified students with $120 to use to buy groceries while school is out for summer break. Students qualify for the program based on family income or if they already receive certain state benefits.

DSHS will be mailing cards to eligible families. Please make sure the district has a current address before June 14th.

Families who have not already filled out a Family Income Survey can do so through June 14th to show income-based qualification for SUN Bucks. Completed forms should be sent to your child’s school.

Parents as Partners: Cell Phones Parents as Partners: Cell Phones

Please review the informational newsletter linked above for additional resources on engaging in conversations about teen cell-phone use with your student. It is important we take time to discuss the effects of cyberbullying that are impacting our students and their ability to fully engage in their learning.

School Policy: Cellphones can be used before school, lunch, and after school. Phones must be turned off or placed on silent when the first bell rings and put away, out of sight. Students are responsible for ensuring that cell phones are not a disruption to the educational process.

Please help to reinforce our schoolwide school cell phone policy. Administration will address technology/ cell phone infractions through problem solving with families

This spring students at the Bay will be taking the Smarter Balanced or the Washington Access to Instruction and Measurement (WA-AIM) tests in math and English language arts. Our 8th grade students will also take the Washington Comprehensive Assessment of Science (WCAS) or the WA-AIM science assessment.

The results from these tests are one of many ways of understanding where students are in their learning, relative to grade-level learning goals in math, English language arts, and science. For students in grade 10, the Smarter Balanced or WA-AIM tests can also be used as a graduation pathway.

Most students will take the tests online. Our school is scheduled to take the tests May 6 - 22

For more information about the Smarter Balanced and WCAS tests, visit: https://ospi.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing, and click on the name of the test.

To try out an online Smarter Balanced practice or training test or WCAS training test, visit the Washington Comprehensive Assessment Program (WCAP) Portal: https://wa.portal.cambiumast.com/index.html and click on the Practice and Training Tests button.

The WA-AIM is an alternate assessment based on alternate achievement standards aligned to the Washington State K–12 Learning Standards for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. For more information about the WA-AIM tests visit: https://ospi.k12.wa.us/student-success/testing/state-testing/assessment-students-cognitive-disabilities-wa-aim.

Please call (360.426.7991) or email (mmarshall@sheltonschools.org) if you have questions about state testing.

Thank you for continuing to work with us to make sure your student is successful. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to better support your student in building their skills so they can have a future full of opportunities.

MAY FOCUS: Resiliency MAY FOCUS: Resiliency

We invite ALL students and their families to participate in our school wide commitment to building resilience in our students throughout the month of May. Students, staff, and families are being provided an opportunity to submit their stories of resilience to share, encourage, and inspire our student body to face life’s challenges head on and thrive in adversity. Read more below. For the month of MAY, we are focusing on RESILIENCY. As a collective team, we can prioritize reteaching, modeling, highlighting, and acknowledging resiliency within our school community

Stories of Resilience- Optional

We welcome all staff to share your story of resilience. Stories have the power to connect us, move us, and challenge us.

  1. Seeing is believing

  2. One real example is worth a dozen studies

  3. Your stories send a powerful message

  4. Stories create connections

  5. Stories challenge assumptions

  6. Your Story Matters

Share a moment when life threw you a curveball, and you not only survived but thrived. Reflect on how you summoned your inner strength, resilience, and determination to overcome the challenge. Your story may inspire others facing their own trials.
