Indigenous Peoples' Day October 14th
On Monday, October 14th, we recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to honor Native American cultures and their invaluable contributions to Turtle Island (North America). Our community, located in Mni Sota Makoce—A Dakota Place—acknowledges the Dakota people's enduring presence and connection to this land. For generations, this has been the Dakota homeland.
Mni Sota, meaning "land where waters reflect the skies," is not only Dakota land but also home to the Anishinaabe and other Indigenous Peoples who continue to enrich the foundation of our region. We invite all District 196 community members to learn about the Dakota, Anishinaabe, and the 574+ Indigenous communities who continue to thrive, celebrating their cultures and resilience. Our district hosts a growing Native American community, with 500+ Indigenous students from 55+ sovereign nations. Discover how District 196 supports them on the American Indian Education Program website
