Greetings Shaw Montessori!
On Thursday, Matilda and Mila represented our district in the regional spelling bee at Madison Center for the Arts. Both spellers did an amazing job. Matilda took 4th place and will be an alternate at the state spelling bee. More information on that event once it becomes available. Thank you, Matilda and Mila, for representing our community. We are so proud!
The destruction of our playground has been something to see! This week, they are hauling away a beach of sand—10-15 tons! The tractors and dump trucks have been busy. The children are acclimating to the reduction in play space and spending time watching the big equipment move earth. **It is important to note that our new playground is funded out of bond monies. Bond’s, voted on by the property owners of district provide money for large improvements and cannot be used directly for classroom instruction, salaries or supplies for instruction.
On Tuesday evening February 4th our governing board held a Public Hearing on the proposed school closures for Dunbar and Heard Schools. There are 3 more public hearings: February 13th at Heard School, February 22nd at Capitol School and February 25th at Dunbar school. I encourage all of you to mobilize now, attend a meeting or two to support our board on the difficult decisions they must make. If these difficult cuts are not made, many of the desirable things that our children now enjoy will be eliminated. The board will vote on the closures at the March 4th meeting in the governing board room.
Wishing you the best,
Principal Engdall

Tips for Dealing with Grief
Grief is something that we all must deal with at some time. Whether it is the loss of a loved one, a pet or a friend it is a difficult subject to navigate with our children. Below are some things to look for and ways to handle discussing grief with your child.
What Parents Can Do
• Be a a good listener
- talk during non-crisis moments
- provide love and guidance
• Be reassuring
- Allow them to talk about their fears, be reassuring & help them feel safe
• Be honest
- Answer questions honestly, paying attention to the age and stage of development
• Be patient
- All children to feel their feels and to cry as needed
- It’s normal to go in and out of grief
• Be aware
- If grief becomes overwhelming and prolonged reach out to Ms. Laura for support
• Be open
- Rely on your support network
If you have any questions, please reach out to Laura.Hildwein@phxschools.org.

Message from the Front Office
When your child is absent, please remember to call the absence line at 602-257-3914. Your first notification should not be to the teacher, but to the Front Office.
When leaving a message, slowly state your child’s name, teacher and reason for the absence. If they are sick, you will need to list a couple symptoms. When we enter the absences there are multiple codes for illnesses, so listing the symptoms helps us to code correctly.
Having your child present at school and on time is most important but remember to call and report if they are absent.
Thank you for your support,

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
This was our first week pickling! We have pickled many fruits and vegetables thus far. We used the dill from our garden and some collards. We also harvested two big broccoli heads off our tower. So far, the students’ favorite pickled item is grapes. Yes, grapes! We pickled grapes without the dill or spices and added a TBSP of sugar and some rosemary from the garden. They are the perfect balance of sweet, sour and salty. Most of this block is focused on our annual herb, dill. We have a ton of it in the garden. I have encouraged students to take dill home along with a canning recipe so that they can make their own pickles.
We had about 15 dads that came out to campus last Saturday. They revamped the primary garden, and it looks fabulous. Say goodbye to the dusty debris of tomorrow and hello to our spongy mulch heaven. It is like walking on a cloud. We will do the same to the primary and elementary pods on parent workday.
CALLING ALL MASON JAR W/ LIDS DONATIONS! If you have some that you are willing to donate, then we will happily accept them. You can leave them on the table outside the office.
Parent workday is two weeks away! Please sign up to help in the garden and beyond. Link is below: https://signup.com/group/1135044326099
We are always seeking coffee grounds, seeds, and aluminum cans. If you have anything that might benefit our garden program, please contact me via email. The front table outside of the office is our designated drop-off location for garden essentials. james.obrien-moench@phxschools.org
Enjoy your weekend!

Make Your Voice Heard – Support Our Schools!
Phoenix Elementary School District #1 is making tough decisions to protect students, staff, and the district’s future. One of their proposals is to close two schools at the end of this school year. The Board’s plan ensures long-term financial stability, retains all current staff, and strengthens educational opportunities for every child.
We need your support at public hearings to ensure these difficult decisions to protect our district's financial sustainability are supported. A strong opposition could overshadow the thoughtful planning behind these decisions – we can’t let that happen.
How You Can Help:
📢 Attend a public hearing and share your support.
📝 Sign up to speak – even a few words make a difference.
👥 Get involved – earn volunteer hours and help organize.
Our goal is to have four parents in person at each of the upcoming meetings.
Please sign up here so we can stay organized. https://signup.com/go/VEkbaxe
These decisions shape the future of our schools. Let’s stand together to ensure the best for our students!
