Language at School
Many students at UES are increasingly using inappropriate language or making unkind comments toward their peers. While our staff is actively working to address this at school, weโre also noticing that influences outside of the classroomโlike social media, group texting, and online contentโare shaping how students communicate with one another. These platforms often expose students to language and behavior they may not yet be ready to navigate, and managing that influence is a challenge we know families are also facing.
To help support positive communication both at school and at home, weโre sharing a few strategies that may be helpful in encouraging respectful language. These ideas are not about blameโtheyโre about working together to guide our children toward kindness, empathy, and self-awareness as they grow.
Tips for Home:
- Model Appropriate Language โ Kids often mirror what they hear. Using respectful language ourselves helps set the tone.
- Stay Calm โ Big reactions to inappropriate words can unintentionally reinforce the behavior. A calm, consistent response is more effective.
- Make It a Learning Moment โ Help your child come up with more appropriate words they can use instead, and practice them together.
- Set Clear Expectations โ Be explicit about what kind of language is acceptable at home, at school, and online.
- Understand the Context โ If inappropriate language continues, explore whether it's linked to stress, frustration, or peer influence.
- Monitor Media and Tech โ Stay involved with the music, games, group chats, and social platforms your child is using.
- Praise Positive Language โ Notice and affirm when your child chooses respectful or kind languageโit goes a long way!
We appreciate your ongoing support in helping students build healthy, respectful communication habits. If you have any questions or would like additional resources, please donโt hesitate to reach out. We're here to support you.

***NOROVIRUS INFO**
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, as well as other symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue, and dehydration. People infected with norovirus usually start to show symptoms 12-48 hours after exposure.
How it Spreads
Norovirus can spread quickly in childcare and schools by:
- Having direct contact with someone with norovirus, like caring for them, sharing food or eating utensils with them, or eating food handled by them.
- Eating food or drinking liquids that are contaminated with norovirus
- Touching contaminated objects or surfaces and then putting your unwashed fingers in your mouth.

Welcome to our new โNotes from the Nursesโ newsletter edition! We will be posting seasonal tips here to help get out important health and safety information based on the time of year we are in. Please return frequently for any new and important information we will share. We hope all of our students and families have a very nice winter break. I love taking care of your children while they are with us, and want to make sure they are always safe and healthy when they are not. The winter season offers many wonderful opportunities for children to go outside and play, but the low temperatures can also lead to dangerous conditions for children. Here are some helpful tips to keep kids safe and warm in the colder weather:
1. Layer up! Cold and snow can cause frostbite (injury to body tissue caused by freezing of the skin and underlying tissue). Be sure to dress your child in several layers, making sure their head, neck, and hands are covered. Rule of thumb is to dress your children in one more layer than an adult would wear.
2. Beware of clothing hazards with small children. Scarves and hood strings can strangle smaller children or get wrapped around extremities causing circulation to be compromised.
3. Use sunscreen even in winter. The sunโs rays can reflect off the snow and cause sunburn for both children and adults.
4. Prevent nosebleeds. If your child is prone to minor winter nosebleeds, use a cold air humidifier in their room and saline nose drops to keep their nose moist.
5. Keep children hydrated. Itโs easier for kids to know to drink fluids when they are hot and sweating, but harder when the weather is colder. In the drier winter months, kids lose more water through their breath. Offer plenty of water, juice, warm drinks, and soups frequently to encourage hydration. We hope that everyone enjoys the winter months in a safe and healthy way! We are always available for your questions!
