May is here! There is a lot to celebrate! This month we recognize Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and we take time to remember the service of men and women who have given their lives for our freedom and our country on Memorial Day, May 29. More information about these important events below. Don't forget we have a special day for Mother's too! Sunday, May 14.

Students in grades three through five will also be participating in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) The first week of May! This year, students will take the following test(s) between May 2nd - May 19th.

How can I help my child get ready for the CAASPP?

You are an important part of your child’s education. Some things you can do to help your child are:

• Talk about the test with your child. Make sure they are not scared or anxious.

• Tell your child that you and his or her teacher have high expectations and that you are both there to help, every step of the way.

• Take a practice test with your child.

• Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing.

Starting this week students in grades three through eight participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP).

This year, your child will take the following test(s) between May 2nd - May 16th:

• Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in English language arts/literacy

• Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in mathematics

• Smarter Balanced Summative Assessment in science (grades 5&8 only)

The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments are online tests that measure what students know and is able to do. The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support he or she needs to be successful in school.

Hathaway would like to invite all students and parents to show extra gratitude to teachers and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 8 - 12!

Here are our daily themes if you choose to join in. Just bring items to your teacher each day. These items do not need to be expensive and you can pick and choose which days to join in.

*Participation in this event is NOT required. Participation is optional.

Ways to show appreciation to your teacher:

Monday - Bring a flower to your teacher

Tuesday - Write a thoughtful note to your teacher

Wednesday - Bring a Sweet Treat for your teacher (candy, fruit etc.)

Thursday - draw a picture for your teacher

Friday - Free choice Do something nice for your teacher today!

Can you believe it? HESD will be celebrating 150 years of educating students on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 from 2:30 - 4:30. The event will be held at the oldest school in our district, Hueneme Elementary! Student performances will take place between 2:30 - 3:15 and 3:45 - 4:30 with formal presentations taking place from 3:15 - 3:45. There will be a table display for every school with artifacts and items representing the school. An early release day will be scheduled for Blackstock JHS since they have a later dismissal on Wednesdays.

Memorial Day is a day dedicated to the service of men and women who have given their lives for our freedom and our country. It is also a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day observance goes back to 1865 and the end of the Civil Wear. Memorial Day is traditionally commemorated by attending a parade or visiting a cemetery to remember and honor our fallen service members.

There will be no school Monday, May 29, 2023 in honor of Memorial Day.

5 Facts To Know About AAPI Heritage Month History:

• According to the 2020 Census, there are 24 million people in the United States who fall under the umbrella of AAPI, and the Pew Research Center has found that Asian Americans are the fastest-growing ethnic group in America.
• Lawmakers chose May because of its historical significance for the AAPI community. It commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States, as well as Golden Spike Day (May 10, 1869), which marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad, largely built by Chinese laborers.
• Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month was able to exist due to the traction from the civil rights movement in the 70s; they were able to find momentum because of Black History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.
• Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month was originally a week; it was President Jimmy Carter who signed it into law in 1978 designating a week to celebrate the AAPI community.
• President George H. W. Bush signed a bill in 1990 that extended the week into the full month and President Barack Obama changed the name to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in 2009.

We are proud to bring our educational partners, "Cafe con Leche" to Hathaway! These parent and staff gatherings are designed to help you learn more about Hathaway, how schools operate, valuable community resources, ask questions and receive any support you may need.

Please join us Friday, May 19 at 8:00 am in our library. Blackstock Jr. High Counselors will be sharing information about middle school! We are asking parents to sign in at the front office and then join us for some fresh coffee and pan dulce!

Parents and guardians of 5th grade students,

Your student does not have to register for 6th grade. If your child is in 5th grade their registration information will automatically be transferred to Blackstock Jr. High School.

You will receive a packet in the mail in August containing important information about orientation, daily schedules and other events.

If you do not plan on having your student attend Blackstock Jr. High School please let us know.

Heartfelt congratulations to Ms. Vasquez for receiving the much deserved recognition of being Hueneme Elementary School Districts Teacher of the Year! Ms. Vasquez attended school at Hathaway as a child and has devoted 36 incredible years to the students staff and community here at Hathaway as an amazing educator! Ms. Vasquez has long been a pillar of professionalism, a role model of dedication and constant growth as an educator. The Hathaway staff is proud and honored to have the opportunity to work along side her through the years. Great work Ms. Vasquez!

Hathaway Community, one of the most important goals at Hathaway is for us to work together to keep all students, staff and educational partners safe as we enter and exit campus. Please be aware that the Oxnard Police Department will be in the area and may be issuing citations.

Please remember:

• During morning drop-of and afternoon pick up, please do not park in red zones or double park on Dollie Street in front of the school.

• Parking lots are for district staff and individuals who need accessible parking only.

• Please remember to use crosswalks and sidewalks when walking to campus.

• Please be respectful to staff as we work together to enforce safety for all.

Hathaway After-School Education and Safety (ASES) enrollment for the 22-23 school year is happening now! Next fall we will have many new and exciting changes! ASES is Monday through Friday after school. Please stop by the office to pick up an ASES enrollment packet. Lets get ready for a great new year of learning!

Hathaway community, please ensure that our students arrive to campus no later than 8:00 am. Arriving on time allows students time to walk to their line and be ready to be picked up by their teacher. Students should be in their seats by 8:05 am. Students arriving after 8:05 are marked tardy.

Great news! starting this year throughout California, as a result of Education Code (EC) 49501.5, all students in grades TK–12 will be provided two meals free of charge (breakfast and lunch) during every school day regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility!

Good food and nutrition are an essential part of great learning!

Gentle reminders for dressing for success when coming to school: Please wear school appropriate clothing when at Hathaway.

Items that are not allowed:

• gang-related insignia/graffiti on clothing, backpack or school supplies/work,

• clothing with inappropriate writing (alcohol, drugs, weapons, disrespectful statements)

• No clothing, hats or personal items with team/sports logos

• Pajamas (except on celebration days)

• sleeveless tops, see through blouses/shirts, low cut or bare midriff tops; spaghetti straps

Nothing that distracts from the learning environment is allowed.
