A Note From Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
Thank you to all the families who joined us for Back to School Night! Your thoughtful and productive engagement plays a vital role in the success of our school community, and we truly appreciate you. The students love seeing families at our school-wide meetings, as well. Please remember, for everyone's safety and comfort, all non-students must remain on the far sides of the gymnasium or seated on the bleachers. Families should avoid blocking aisles or sitting among the students. We value your cooperation. We also deeply appreciate your continued cooperation in showing identification at the security desk and supporting our efforts to maintain a secure environment. Your partnership in these safety protocols is invaluable.
In addition to our ongoing safety drills and discussions, we understand that recent events around our nation and the world at large, can be challenging for some. To support you in navigating these conversations at home, we would like to share a few helpful resources that may provide guidance, if so desired. Together, we can work to ensure our children feel safe, informed, and cared for by their community. Please see below.
As always, please feel free to email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov, with any school specific inquiries.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal
Hyde-Addison Elementary School

Cross Country Running 2024-2025
This year Hyde-Addison will offer cross country running as an after-school activity available to 4th and 5th grade students. Cross country is long-distance, outdoor running. At meets, elementary students will run 2 miles, however, they will be expected to run up to 3 miles in one practice by the end of the season. In order to ensure the safety of the runners, students will be required to try out for the team.
Practices and meets will be held rain or shine, so students should be willing to brave the elements! If your student is interested in cross country, please reach out to Ms. Wiegmann, Hyde-Addison’s athletic director, at megan.wiegmann@k12.dc.gov no later than September 6th. Tryout and practice dates will be announced soon.

DC CAPE Data
Per the Executive Office of the Mayor, "Each spring, DC students in grades 3-8 and in eligible high school courses complete statewide assessments in ELA and math. These assessments measure mastery of grade-level content standards. From 2015 to 2023, the District was a member of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and administered PARCC assessments in ELA and math. In 2024, the District transitioned from the PARCC assessments to DC CAPE, a rigorous assessment that measures proficiency of the District’s high grade-level expectations. This was a change in name and governance only. DC CAPE uses the same design – number of questions, types of questions, and length of assessment – as PARCC, and scores are comparable across years.
The assessments have five performance levels that are based on student scaled scores – with level 4 and level 5 indicating that a student meets or exceeds proficiency expectations for their grade level. Performing at these levels means that students have met the District’s rigorous grade-level academic expectations, indicating they are building necessary skills for success in a wide range of post-graduation options."
Please see below, for an overview of the 2024 scores for Hyde-Addison ES and DCPS. Student specific data will be shared with families, when available.
