District 103

School Board Highlights
February 25, 2025
Celebrating Success
Fourth-grade students collaborated with Board members to program a Sphero robot ball, turning the experience into an interactive and engaging learning opportunity. Under the guidance of fourth-grade teacher Jami Reed and technology integration specialist Italy Wallace, students and Board members participated in a football-themed coding challenge. This hands-on activity not only introduced the Board to coding concepts but also demonstrated how the lesson aligns with computer literacy and computer science standards.
School Calendar
The Board approved an amended 2025-2026 school calendar based on recommendations from the district’s calendar committee. The updated calendar more closely aligns District 103’s end date with that of Stevenson High School.
iPad Lease
The Board approved a four-year Apple lease for 410 (10.9-inch) iPads at a total cost of $132,840 to support student learning and technology integration.
Staffing Plan
The Board reviewed 2025-2026 enrollment projections in relation to the district’s staffing plan. Current K-8 enrollment of 1,850 students is expected to see a slight increase next year. Dr. Scott Warren, Superintendent, will present a final staffing plan for Board approval at a future meeting.
Timeline on Student Involvement
Dr. Katie Reynolds, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, provided the Board with a timeline for selecting student representatives to the Board of Education. Seventh-grade students will be invited to apply in March, with interviews scheduled for April, and an official announcement at the May Board meeting. Selected students will begin their advisory role in fall 2025, offering input on key issues from a student perspective.
Cell Phone Legislation
Governor JB Pritzker has introduced legislation requiring all public school districts to adopt policies banning cell phone use in classrooms. District 103 already enforces a similar policy, requiring students to keep their phones turned off and stored in lockers during the school day. Dr. Warren noted that the proposed legislation would have minimal impact on the district’s current operations. The Board has been invited to meet with local legislators to provide feedback on the proposed policy.
Bus Driver Service Agreement Approved
The Board approved a Bus Driver Services Agreement with First Student Transportation Services through the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year at a rate of $300 per day per driver. This agreement aims to mitigate the driver shortage District 103 has been facing.
AI Presentation
Dr. Craig Chatham, Director of Technology and Assessment, provided an update on the progress and direction of District 103’s artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives. He outlined the district’s vision for AI integration, focusing on enhancing learning, streamlining tasks, personalizing education, and fostering responsible AI literacy. As part of this effort, the district plans to implement MagicSchool, an AI platform designed by educators for educators, ensuring both student safety and data privacy while maximizing teacher-student engagement.
