Welcome Back to 2024 - 2025 School Year
Dear Washington District Families,
Dear Washington District Elementary School Families,
I am thrilled to introduce myself as the new principal of Washington District Elementary School! It is an honor to join this incredible community and to work alongside dedicated educators, enthusiastic students, and supportive families. My name is Wilfredo Hernandez, and I come to you from Westmoreland High School, where I had the privilege of serving as the assistant principal.
At Washington District Elementary, we are committed to providing a nurturing and stimulating environment where every child can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our goal is to foster a love of learning, encourage curiosity, and support each student in reaching their full potential. I believe that a strong partnership between home and school is essential for the success of our students, and I look forward to building these connections with each of you.
I am also delighted to share the exciting news that Washington District Elementary is once again fully accredited. This achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, staff, and families. It reflects our commitment to academic excellence and our continuous efforts to provide the highest quality education for all our students.
Let me share a bit about my background. I will be entering my 34th year in education and 8th year here in Westmoreland County Public Schools. Before joining Washington District Elementary, I served as an assistant principal and had various roles in education, including summer academy site coordinator, department chair, and extra-curricular activities in coaching. I have also taught health and physical education across multiple schools throughout Virginia, increasing student engagement and integrating technology into the curriculum. My leadership experience includes coordinating school-wide improvement plans, managing safety protocols, and enhancing student support programs.
Throughout the school year, we will focus on creating a positive and inclusive atmosphere, enhancing our academic programs, and ensuring that every student feels valued and supported. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and am confident that together, we can make this year a memorable and successful one for all our students. Our theme for this school year is "Focused and Ready"!
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas. My door is always open, and I am eager to hear from you and to work together to make Washington District Elementary the best it can be.
Thank you for your warm welcome. I am looking forward to meeting each of you and embarking on this journey together.
Warm regards,
Wilfredo Hernandez

Theme for the Year: Focused and Ready!
Why Daily Attendance Matters:
Missed Lessons = Falling Behind: Even one day can mean missing critical instructions and activities, making it harder for your child to catch up.
Impact on Future Success: Consistent attendance is a strong predictor of academic achievement and future opportunities.
Building Resilience: Regular attendance teaches your child the value of perseverance and responsibility—essential skills for success in life.
Stronger Friendships: Daily presence helps your child develop and sustain friendships, which are crucial for emotional and social development.
Healthy Routine: Attending school every day establishes a stable routine, promoting better mental and physical health.
