Virtue of the Month: Kindness
In March, we celebrate the virtue of kindness. God wants us to give generously to others around us.
A kind personā¦
- gives their time to help others
stands by their friends in time of need
shares with their friends
is polite
cares about other peopleās feelings
God wants us to be kind to everyone we meet. Being kind is about more than just pretending to be nice. It is about helping and playing with others because we want to and not because we feel we have to. God helps us to be kind to our family and friends because by being kind we are able to see God in every one we meet.
Punctuality Matters -- Be On Time!ā°
We are noticing that some students are arriving to school after the morning bell. When this happens, students must sign in at the office and they are marked late. Also, students who are late are often missing important announcements or instructional time. Our school day starts at 8:30am. The yard is supervised between 8:15-8:30am. All students should be at school before the 8:30am bell and should have time to go to the yard and enter the school with the rest of their classmates. Punctuality is essential!
Spirit Week -- March 4th-8th
ShareLife Used Book Sale -- April 23rd
Donations Between March 4th and April 17th
The Youth Faith Ambassadors will be running a Book Drive at SFA! For āa Buck a Bookā students can purchase gently used, donated books. The proceeds collected will help benefit the ShareLife campaign. Sharelife supports the many local Catholic charities that help individuals, families and communities in need.
We ask that as you approach the March Break, and find yourself doing some Spring cleaning, that if you have any books in good condition that you are willing to donate, we would be very grateful to receive them in a āDonation Binā at the front of the school. Books can be donated between March 4th 2024 and April 17th 2024. The āBuck a Bookā Sale will be on April 23rd, 2024. Students can bring a dollar per book they wish to purchase.
āāWe thank everyone in the St. Francis of Assisi community for all that they do throughout the year to help others and to make a difference. We appreciate those ongoing efforts, as we stay committed to living out our Catholic values and putting faith into action.
Many thanks,
Ms. Zapasek, Ms. Lence and the Youth Faith Ambassadors Team
Lenten Food Drive --Youth Faith Ambassadors
February 20th to March 28th, 2024
So far, we have collected 8 full boxes! We encourage the school community to keep on sharing their blessings and generously continue to donate.
The Lenten season serves as a holy period of preparation, reflection and almsgiving. As we wait in anticipation for the resurrection of the Lord, Our Saviour, we must take important steps that will help strengthen our faith and relationship with God. To show our outward love to others, St. Francis of Assisi Youth Faith Ambassadors are excited to announce a Lenten Food Drive that will be taking place between February 20th to March 28th, 2024.
This food drive will allow students to carry out acts of charity while building their compassion to help those in need within our community.
If you are willing and able, please provide a donation of non-perishable food items to support the Eden Food Bank. The following are some examples of items that can be given: canned goods, cereal, granola bars, pasta, rice, oatmeal, sauce, snacks, hygiene products, etc.
St. Francis of Assisi school community has a great history of generosity. We thank you in advance for supporting this worthy cause and answering the call to give.
Ms. Zapasek and Ms. Lence
Lent
Lent is the 40-day season of preparation for Easter that ends on Holy Thursday, three days before Easter Sunday. During Lent, Catholics recall their baptism and do penance ā fasting, prayer, and almsgiving as they commemorate the death and resurrection of Christ.
During this time, our SFA Youth Ambassadors will be leading the way as we approach the Lenten season by assisting in our Easter Food Drive and My Lenten Promises activity. More information will be shared through the daily announcements and via School Messenger.
Eco News
"God made the heavens and the earth and it was good." Genesis 1:1-31.
At SFA, we are taking great steps to be good stewards of our environment and care for all of God's creation. Our Eco Team is busy at work planning ways to heighten awareness. Please take a look below!
World Water Day/The Great Gulp - March 22nd
In celebration of World Water Day on March 22nd, our school will be participating in the Great Gulp, by taking a drink of tap water from a reusable bottle, glass, or mug. Through this simple action we hope to raise awareness about drinking water, access to safe and healthy tap water, and the importance of reducing single-use plastic waste in Canada.
Simple daily actions, such as using a reusable water bottle, can have a big impact on the environment.
Earth Hour -- March 27th
On Saturday March 23rd 2024, at 8:30pm, millions of people across the world will take part in Earth Hour by switching off their lights for an hour. Earth Hour unites people across the world who are passionate about our planet. From changing individual behaviour to legislation, WWF Earth Hour has achieved massive environmental impact. On Wednesday March 27th, we will be celebrating Earth Hour as a school community. The students will be making personal environmental pledges and we will turn off the lights for one hour in the afternoon to show our commitment to learning about and reducing climate change. We love this planet and and care for it as we do all of God's creation.
SFA Eco Team
The EcoTeam is a group of students that meet weekly to review our school's energy and waste practices. Once the information is gathered, the EcoTeam creates and implements a formal action plan for improvement. Our plan includes student directed implementation of environmental initiative campaigns through morning announcements, posters, email and in-class lessons. Our school's EcoTeam will review our progress every month and document the progress achieved.
