Congratulations Future Cities Design Team
Eighth Grade Gifted Support Students from Lower Moreland Middle School attended the Philadelphia regional Future City Competition on Saturday 1/18/2025. The students were challenged to create a city of the future while keeping to the theme of "Above the Current" - Design a floating city and provide two innovative examples of how your floating city works and keeps citizens healthy and safe.
The students began working on this project at the end of last school year. They were tasked with writing an essay, building a scaled model of their city, developing and delivering a presentation to a group of engineers, participating in a presentation Q&A, developing a 4 part project plan, and spending hours on a Saturday morning interviewing with a variety of engineers from all disciplines about their city.
The LMMS Team - Pictopolis walked away with five engineering awards! They won the following awards:
- Best Future City Project Plan
- Best Transportation System Award
- Transportation Infrastructure Award
- Creative Electrical Distribution Award
- Fire Protection Engineering Award
This project is a true team effort. The students also worked with our engineering mentor and LM Hall of Fame Alum - Greg Jakobowski. He has graciously given his time to our team from the very beginning about 10 years ago. Congratulations to Mrs. Meyers and the Future Cities Team members!

Careers Classes Mock Interviews
Eighth grade students in Mr. Manning's Careers class conducted mock job interviews to practice appropriately responding to some common job interview questions. Students were asked five questions at random from a list of ten of the most commonly asked job interview questions. Students were interviewing for the position of Sales Representative at Mr. Manning's fictitious company: Pencil Perfect.
Students had to use their knowledge of the company, and prior research about common interview questions to practice answering their five questions. This experience gives students an opportunity to feel what it is like to have a job interview and prepare them for any potential interviews they have in the near future!
Grade 8 Science Motion Unit Begins
Eighth grade Science classes started our Motion Unit. Students are thinking outside the box by creating their own lab procedures to measure the speed of moving objects. Our lab groups are creating detailed procedures, setting up their work, measuring distance and time and then calculating speed. We are learning our first attempt may not always be the best option and procedures have to be reworked to achieve success.
