Greetings Shaw Montessori!
Ms. Bacon and Mr. Leinbach’s classes took an overnight to The Desert Outdoor Center. The students enjoyed night hikes, learning more about insect characteristics, using compasses and microscopes and delicious food! Also, this week our middle school students took a 3-day trip to camp Tontozona. Hikes, campfires, archery, orienteering, pond and stream ecology, astronomy and building solar amusement park ride models were just a few things they enjoyed….besides one another. Big thanks to the staff and parents for the organization and oversight of this experience for our students!
Art teacher Allison Young and 6 of her middle school art students celebrated and displayed their art in the reception are of our district office. Congratulations to students Zoe Gootee, Donovan Mowzoon, Aurora Moreno, Mila Martinez, Isabella Flores, and Katie Fuller on their beautiful landscape pieces.
Speaking of art, next week our student art greeting cards will go on sale! Ms. Allison will be selling afterschool November 15-22. Should you miss her, they will be available in the school office. Stop by and purchase a pack, 4 cards for just $5.00! Great for the holidays or any occasion.
Coach Wilfert and the Shaw Stars Soccer team played Garfield on Thursday evening. The Shaw Stars won 3-0, way to go team!!
Our school and district will be closed on Monday in observance of Veteran’s Day. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday morning.
Please plan to attend our Literacy Night at the Burton Barr library on Wednesday, November 13th from 4-6PM. Our Reading Interventionist Debbie Carwitz has numerous fun activities planned for us! Shaw students will lead tours of the library and its amazing spaces!
All the best,
Principal Engdall

Elementary Garden
Greetings!
Our final week with entomology! This week we looked at white flies on our bottle gourds. White flies will slowly suck the life out of the foliage in your garden. They are tiny and proliferate fast. The best way to repel them is to spray with soapy water and/or a couple drops of neem oil. Even the hundreds of white flies are no match for our bottle gourd vines. They are officially the largest plant we have ever grown in the garden. Next year we will plant more gourds for a gourd lesson. Gourd vibes only!
I also had the students pet honeybees this week. YES, YOU CAN SAFELY PET HONEYBEES IF THEY ARE POLLINATING FLOWERS. When bees are around flowers, they are hyper focused on collecting nectar for the hive. They become super docile, sluggish, and agreeable (kind of like dads on football Sunday when they have their BBQ, football, and a recliner). The only time you are in danger of being stung is when a bee is fighting for its life (in a pool or if you step/sit on one) OR if they are near the hive. Do not pet bees in any other environment other than around flowers! This has been a fun practice to show students how friendly bees are and to help overcome their apiphobia. Next week we start our basil and pesto block!
The middle school is hosting a Friendsgiving on November 22nd from 10:30-12:30. This event is for middle school students and faculty only (sorry parents). We are asking middle school parents to register for dishes and items. Please follow the link below to signup: https://signup.com/go/FKzEZXS
