Dealing with Seasonal Allergies
Seasonal allergies strike at different times of the year. Also known as allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, seasonal allergy symptoms occur when airborne irritants, or allergens, enter the eyes, nose, and throat, setting off an allergic reaction. When we are outside, pollen circulates through the air and lands on our bodies. It can be in our hair, skin, eyes, mouth, and nose.
Symptoms of Spring allergies include:
● Sneezing
● Stuffy and/or runny nose
● Scratchy and/or sore throat
● Dry cough
● Itchy and watery eyes, gritty feeling in eyes or feelings of sand in eyes, redness, puffy eyelids, and dark circles under eyes
● Itchy, bumpy skin, redness, and hives
What you can do about seasonal allergies:
Check the forecast for pollen levels, and limit outdoor activities when pollen counts are at their highest.
Remove your shoes at the door at home. Take off your shoes before you come into the house, so you don’t track in pollen.
Have your child wash their hands and face or shower and change clothes after being outside.
Close windows in the house and the car. Opening windows can be refreshing, but they let in pollen. Close windows and outside doors, especially on high-pollen days, and turn on the air conditioning, if available. Use the “recirculate” option in the car instead of the vent, which may let in pollen.
Treatment for Itchy, Watery, Red and Burning Eyes:
Splash eyes with water and apply wet cloth to their eyes.
Check with your child’s doctor regarding appropriate oral allergy medications and allergy eye drops for these symptoms.
Treatment for Itchy Skin:
The skin can respond to pollen with symptoms of small, fine bumps, itching, redness, and hives. Check with your child’s doctor regarding appropriate oral and topical allergy medications for these symptoms.
Medication for Seasonal Allergies Symptoms:
Sometimes avoiding pollen isn’t enough, and often it is just not possible. Your child may need allergy medicine. Although there are many over-the-counter antihistamines, decongestants, and nasal sprays, it is important that you work with your pediatrician to make sure that your child’s allergy is correctly diagnosed, and the symptoms are properly treated.

This Month in Health & Wellness 🍎
Hello Thacher Families,
The past few months have been an exciting and busy time in Health and Wellness! At the end of March and in early April, students completed a safety and accident prevention unit. Topics included safety items (like helmets, seatbelts, and sunscreen), common injuries, playground safety, first aid basics, community safety, situational awareness, and strangers.
Our next unit was personal hygiene, and grades K, 2, and 4 participated in discussions about age appropriate hygiene skills and choices, such as regular bathing, what hygiene items are, how they are used, and how to keep our bodies clean. Grades 1 and 3 were introduced to various body systems, and Grade 1 completed a body systems project in which they worked in small groups to draw and label their assigned body system using chalk. Grade 1 learned about the respiratory, muscular, skeletal, and circulatory systems, while Grade 3 focused on the integumentary, digestive, nervous, and immune systems.
Insights classrooms have also learned about hygiene skills, safety items, and were encouraged to ‘eat the rainbow.’ Students are practicing our “Food of the Day” vocabulary two times a week for foods and drinks starting with each letter of the alphabet. We were able to have some classes in the small gymnasium or outside to play T-ball, practice our 3 legged race, and chase each other with Capture the Tail.
With the warmer weather finally here, many classes were outside playing games and working on teamwork skills. We safely watched the solar eclipse, played tag, and the younger students were introduced to the ‘big playground’ to actively practice their playground safety skills. Kindergarten is now learning how to play hopscotch and four square, while grades 2-4 are also learning four square and Ultimate Football (similar to ultimate frisbee, but easier to catch!).
As the warm weather continues, classes will hopefully be outside as often as we’re able! If possible, it would be great if students could wear sneakers on Health and Wellness Class days, and feel free to bring a water bottle.
Wishing the best to all of our families; Happy Spring!!
