Message from the Superintendent
Greetings Roller Families,
Welcome back to the school year 2023-2024. We trust you had an enjoyable summer break. As we step into this new school year, our district's mission remains focused on providing education and support to our students. We are excited to have our students return and are immensely grateful for the ongoing support from our school community. Let's work together to make this year great.
We encourage you to be engaged in your child’s school activities. Effective communication is a pivotal element in your child's achievements. Try and stay informed and support your child by doing the following:
- Regularly visit our website and follow our social media accounts for vital updates.
- Maintain an open line of communication with your child's school, especially their teachers, to ensure appropriate progress is being made.
- Direct any questions to your child's teacher and/or principal. We are here to assist you throughout the year.
In addition, if you have specific questions for me, we have added a new "Ask the Superintendent" feature on the district website under "Superintendent". This is an additional way to reach me directly.
Your child's success is important to us, and it takes the collective effort of the entire school community to ensure their success. We are excited to invite our families to the Back to School Night on August 24, 2023, commencing at 2pm for Kindergarten and 4pm for grades 1-12. I wish you a fantastic school year ahead and eagerly anticipate seeing all of our students back on Monday, August 28, 2023.

Welcome Back Elementary Students & Families
Roller Families,
Welcome back to the 2023-2024 school year! I hope you had a fun and relaxing summer. We are looking forward to working with you and your child(ren) this school year. At Steelton-Highspire Elementary School we are committed to providing your child(ren) with rich and quality learning experiences that nurture the whole child; academically, physically, socially and emotionally. We personally believe in and take pride in always doing what is best for students. We will continue to use this guiding principle when making decisions about our school and most importantly your child(ren).
This year, we have a new assistant principal at the elementary school, Mrs. Elayne Thomas. Mrs. Thomas has been employed with the district for the last 18 years serving in multiple roles. She spent over 10 years in the classroom as a third grade teacher and most recently served as our reading specialist for the last 6 years. Ms. Neidlinger, who has served as the assistant principal over the last 5 years has stepped into a new role as our Director of Student Services. We are so proud of the amazing team we are building at our district to help serve our community.
We will be starting the school year off with roughly 700 students in kindergarten-6th grade. We have an excellent group of teachers and support staff that are ready and willing to attend to the families of Steelton and Highspire. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child(ren’s) teachers via phone, email or Class Dojo. Our goal is to always get back to you within a 24 hour timeframe so that we can best assist our student’s and family’s needs. If you have any additional concerns and would like to speak with an administrator, please feel free to contact Mrs. Armstead via email at MArmstead@shsd.k12.pa.us or via phone at 717-704-3800 ext 4276 or Mrs. Thomas via email at EThomas@shsd.k12.pa.us or via phone at 717-704-3800 ext 4286.
We are looking forward to another wonderful year at SHES. We welcome you to involve yourself in our school in a variety of ways. Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can answer any questions or be of further assistance to you and your family. Together, we can make this school year a success.

Welcome Back Jr./Sr. High School Students & Families
Dear Steelton-Highspire Junior Senior High School Families and Students,
Welcome back to an exhilarating new school year! As we gather once again, we are filled with anticipation and enthusiasm to embark on a journey of growth and learning together. The theme we have chosen for this year is "Good is the Enemy of Great! GO BE GREAT!" - a powerful reminder that we are not merely satisfied with being good; we strive for greatness in everything we do.
At Steelton-Highspire, we firmly believe that greatness is not an inherent trait but a destination we achieve through collective effort. Our students, parents, teachers, staff, and community members are the vital components of this journey towards excellence. We are not just good; we are great, and we will continue to push the boundaries of our potential.
The upcoming academic year is an opportunity for us to unite as one team, supporting and encouraging each other along the way. Our strength lies in our ability to communicate openly, support one another wholeheartedly, and work together relentlessly to create an environment where greatness thrives.
Together, we are a force to be reckoned with, capable of achieving remarkable things. As we stand at the cusp of change, the time is now to embrace innovation and creativity. Let us break barriers, challenge conventions, and explore uncharted territories, empowering our students to discover their full potential.
We believe in the power of collaboration, and when we come together, we can surmount any challenge that comes our way. Our commitment to fostering a culture of cooperation and respect will undoubtedly pave the way for greatness to flourish.
As we look ahead, we cannot contain our excitement for the incredible opportunities that lie ahead. The journey will be filled with memorable experiences, groundbreaking achievements, and moments that will shape the lives of our students for years to come.
Parents and families, we thank you for entrusting us with the education and growth of your children. Your unwavering support is instrumental in the success of our students, and we are honored to partner with you in this endeavor.
Students, this is your time to shine. Embrace the challenges, seize every opportunity, and set your sights on greatness. You have the potential to achieve greatness in all aspects of your lives, and we are here to guide and support you every step of the way.
Together, let's make this school year one to remember. We are eager to witness the transformation and growth that will undoubtedly occur as we come together as a team and strive for excellence. The journey may not always be easy, but with determination and unity, there is no doubt that we will conquer all obstacles.
Once again, welcome back to Steelton-Highspire Junior Senior High School! The stage is set for greatness, and we cannot wait to witness all the incredible things that are coming down the pike.
Let's go, be great!

Congratulations Ms. Toro-Cotto
Congratulations to our very own 4th-grade teacher, Ms. Toro-Cotto, for her participation in Capital Area Intermediate Unit’s new program: Capital Area Pathways to Teaching (CAPT).
According to CAIU, “Educators with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education can earn a master’s degree in the Art of Teaching. This program provides the opportunity for them to earn either a Master’s of Arts and Teaching (MAT) in Elementary Education by completing 36 credit hours (12 courses) or an MAT in Secondary Education by completing 39 credit hours (13 courses) — all while working in a classroom.”
We are so proud of Ms. Toro-Cotto!
