About the Newsletter
The Madison-Oneida BOCES Staff and Curriculum Development Newsletter is a platform that we use to provide you with curated resources, things to know, tools to use, and ideas to explore.
If we share them, it's because we have looked at them and we think they might be worthy of your limited time! Click on the things that you think will help you and skip the things that won't. And remember, we are here if you need us!

THE READING CORNER
The Science of Reading
Many educators and districts are starting to swim into the research of the science of reading and to adjust instruction. They are taking a deep dive into all practices that teach students how to read.
This month we share a "homegrown" science of reading website from one of our very own regional teachers, VVS educator and elementary team leader, Amanda Duffy! Thanks for sharing your hard work with us, Amanda!
A Book Room Built on the Science of Reading
If you are beginning the shift in your mind or in instructional practice and resources, here is a way to rethink your book room.
Dr. Pam Kastner posted the book room seen below. She writes...
"Now this is a book room!! This book room resembles the Simple View of Reading. Decodable text organized by phonics patterns for practice with taught phonics skills to build accuracy and automaticity and a large sight word vocabulary. (Word Recognition)
"Leveled text 'repurposed' as knowledge bins to develop vocabulary, build background knowledge and so much more!! (Language Comprehension)"

When It All Comes Together
When I sent the call out for April Newsletter ideas, one of our secretaries, Jillian Christian, did some research and discovered that it was both national humor month and national poetry month. And then she found Slam Poetry Champion Harry Baker. Turn on the closed captions on your video, and you’ll appreciate his genius even more!
