Looking to care for and guide our seniors with their post-Northwood aspirations this year we are: Justin Felhaber, Simon Shergold, Andrea Farrell, myself, and Sandy Baker, our executive assistant, who serves as the keystone in the arch that is the college office. Para los padres y las familias cuyas idioma principal es español, el castellano es mi segundo idioma y me quedo atento a las preguntas y consultas suyas.

The College Process at Northwood
For those who are new to Northwood and the college process at here, we host between 35-50 colleges each year in both in-person and on-line events. We send personal invites to students who we feel are great fits for visiting schools and we’ll copy parents on those invites to always keep the parents informed of the schools that their children will be visiting with here on campus. All seniors and PGs are ALWAYS welcome to attend the the school day events, (unless they have an in-class assessment) and where possible, we’ll send an invitation to parents as well when colleges are open to parents joining their children in the audience. Each fall we host as many as 5 evening events that are shared with students and families. A couple of these events are also shared with the greater community off-campus and across northern NY State. Doing this allows us to host a greater variety of schools and our colleagues on the other side of the desk in the admission offices are grateful for Northwood taking on the initiative. Monday, Sept 23rd, is our first evening event and we are hosting: Middlebury, Williams and Bates Colleges in the HUB on Main Street between 7pm-8pm.
Visits in Progress
Well, we’re now two weeks in the door and we have already hosted 3 college visitors: St. Michael’s College (Colchester VT) and UVM (University of Vermont) and Providence College. As we move down the calendar, the number of visits will be greater as we transition toward the high tide of college visitors. The next 2 weeks finds Fairfield U, Gonzaga U, Santa Clara U, St. Bonaventure U, Syracuse U, Concordia U (MTL) and Niagara U coming to campus.
The work in progress
This week found the 4 of us in the college office meeting with a collection of our seniors in one-on-one appts. During the summer months, teachers stole time from their summer vacation to give their support to our seniors post-Northwood aspirations by writing nearly 40 Letters of Rec (LOR) for nearly two dozen of our students. Those LOR are now sitting in the queue in the students’ SCOIR accounts ready to be submitted to colleges. The close of last week also saw me meet with the seniors and PGs from the girls’ hockey team where we spent a good couple hours working our way through their Common App accounts. Great group of seniors in this year's team.
Student/athletes
We’ve seen multiple students across our soccer and girls’ hockey teams already commit to colleges to play their sports in the NCAA at Div 1 or Div 3 programs. Congrats to all of those students-athletes, their families and our coaches! We’re pleased for and proud of them.
SAT Prep Class
This year’s SAT tests will be managed by girls’ hockey coach Franny Gerardi and this Fall’s class began this Tuesday. There are 7 classes remaining. If you have not received the info for the 5-week course in an email from Northwood in the last 2 weeks, please write directly to our testing expert, Mr. Brian Marohnic, at highendtestprep@yahoo.com. Brian lives in Middlebury, VT and has worked with my students for more than decade. He is one of the very best in the business. I have great confidence in his work, and I can’t say enough about how well he prepares students for the SAT.
Inside Northwood
The Mirror: Student Journalism at Northwood
The Mirror is Northwood's student newspaper staffed by the 14 students in the journalism course. The staff is led by journalism teacher Mr. Spear and editors-in-chief Sydney Kuder '25 and Sasha Luhur '27. The Mirror is in its 92nd year of publication and features stories on all aspects of life at Northwood. Articles are published on the website and featured on their social media accounts, which are managed by Li Feng '25. Follow The Mirror on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.
Husky Health
This week, the health team launched the inaugural edition of "Husky Health News," a student-centered newsletter that provides vital information and resources for physical and mental health. In this first issue (see below), we outline the layers of support available at Northwood, including Advisors, Deans, Dorm Staff, Nurses, Athletic Trainers, and Counselors. We also include important phone numbers for urgent situations, ensuring that all new and returning students feel equipped to seek help when needed. Looking ahead, future editions will explore topics such as nutrition, sports psychology, athletic injury prevention, healthy habits for illness prevention, mindfulness, emotional well-being, and other subjects suggested by students. We’re excited to create a resource that truly meets the needs of our community!
Support for International Students
Mr. David McCauley, Director of College Counseling and Director of International Students, reports: "We've been busy helping international students set up mobile phone accounts, and we expect that all students will be connected by the end of this coming week. As always, I welcome any family contact for any matter large or small: mccauleyd@northwoodschool.org."
