MS 50 Updates: Week of September 23, 2024

ELT Registration is now open! We are excited to launch our ELT Clubs on Wednesday, October 9th. Students are invited to look through the course catalog and register online at ms50.org/elt through September 29th. If your choices change before the 29th, simply resubmit the registration form. We will use your most recent submission when assigning classes.

Dads High Five Line

Huge shoutout to all the dads, moms, parents, and guardians who came out to greet our students with a joyful high five line on Friday morning! This incredible tradition just keeps growing and we are so thankful for our community! Check our website later this week for more pictures.

PTA Kickoff Meeting

Our first PTA Meeting of the year is this Thursday, September 26th at 6:00PM! Join us in-person at MS 50 for information on the upcoming year, planning out fundraising opportunities, and organizing for this year. Come and build community while supporting our students!

Healthy Smiles Dental Cleanings

Our El Puente Community Schools team is proud to once again partner with Healthy Smiles to provide free dental cleanings to all MS 50 students this Thursday and Friday, September 26 and 27! No insurance is required. Please fill out the permission slip on Operoo to ensure your student has access to this service.

Classroom Spotlight: Math

6th Grade- Area and Surface Area

In this unit, students learn to find areas of polygons by decomposing, rearranging, and composing shapes. They learn to understand and use the terms “base” and “height,” and find areas of parallelograms and triangles. Students approximate areas of non-polygonal regions by polygonal regions. They represent polyhedra with nets and find their surface areas.

7th Grade- Scale Drawings

In this unit, students learn to understand and use the terms “scaled copy,” “to scale,” “scale factor,” “scale drawing,” and “scale,” and recognize when two pictures or plane figures are or are not scaled copies of each other. They use tables to reason about measurements in scaled copies, and recognize that angle measures are preserved in scaled copies, but lengths are scaled by a scale factor and areas by the square of the scale factor. They make, interpret, and reason about scale drawings. These include maps and floor plans that have scales with and without units.

8th Grade Algebra- One Variable Statistics

In this unit on one-variable statistics, students discuss the difference between statistical and non-statistical questions and classify that data as numerical or categorical. They represent and interpret data using data displays, and describe distributions using the appropriate terminology. They create data displays and calculate summary statistics using technology, then interpret the values in context. They learn that standard deviation is a measure of variability, and they interpret standard deviation in context. They recognize outliers, investigate their source, make decisions about excluding them from the data set, and understand how the presence of outliers impacts measures of center and measures of variability. They compare measures of center and the standard deviation and the interquartile range for different data sets. In the culminating activity, students pose and answer a statistical question by designing an experiment, collecting data, and analyzing data.

Tryout and Audition Schedule

We had a great first week of tryouts for Football, Soccer, and Mathletes! We love to see so many of our students excited to participate in everything MS 50 has to offer. This week we have our Art Portfolio interest meetings, Boys and Girls Basketball tryouts, and Theatre auditions! Check Operoo for a permission slip for all tryouts and auditions. All tryouts will be from 2:40-4:00PM. Check out the important dates below:

All MS 50 students are eligible for a FREE internet hotspot through T-Mobile's Project 10Million. This provides 100GB of yearly data for 5 years in addition to low-cost laptops and tablets for your student. When you apply online, use "NYC Chancellor's Office" for the school district and "Jhs 50 John D Wells" for school name.
