Partnering for a Safe School Community
Ensuring our students' and staff's safety and well-being remains our highest priority. As we near the end of the school year, we want to take a moment to thank our families for their partnership. Your support and conversations at home have made a meaningful impact on student behaviors, reinforcing the importance of making good choices and reporting concerns appropriately.
How We Address Threats
We take every report of a threat seriously–whether that threat is made on social media, in person or through another means. Our administrators work closely with our Safety and Security team and local law enforcement to investigate each case thoroughly. This process includes reviewing past behavior, gathering input from families, and conducting interviews. If a credible threat is identified, we will immediately notify staff and families. You can learn more about our safety protocols and threat assessment process on our district website.
Partnering to Keep Schools Safe
This spring, we will continue our informational graphics through Canvas for grades 6-12 about the real consequences of making threats. Even offhand comments or social media posts can have serious repercussions, including school disciplinary action or legal consequences. It’s important for students to think before they post or speak.
We encourage families to listen to our fall 2024 BV Unmuted podcast episode: Understanding Threats and Their Consequences. In this episode, former Interim Chief Simon Happer (Overland Park Police Department), Dan Carney (Director of Safety & Security), and Dr. Katie Collier (Deputy Superintendent for Learning) discuss how Blue Valley ensures a safe and secure learning environment.

How You Can Help
Report Concerns: Please remind your student to report any concerning behavior to school staff or use our online reporting system.
Avoid Spreading Rumors: Social media can spread misinformation and create unnecessary anxiety. Instead of sharing posts, report them directly to school administrators or law enforcement with as much detail as possible.
Your partnership plays a vital role in maintaining a safe school environment. Thank you for your ongoing trust and support.

Reminder - We have school on Friday, April 25th
This is a reminder about calendar adjustments in and April:
Friday, April 25 – This is now a school day for all students.
Attendance & Late to School Reminders
A student’s attendance is essential to learning—learning that includes not only factual subject matter but also attendance habits, work habits, attitudes, and ideals. Research shows that educational achievement is directly related to attendance.
Students are expected to be in their classroom at 7:35/8:35 when the final bell rings. We see students who continue to struggle to arrive at school on time, which causes missed class time that adds up quickly.
If students drive to school, please encourage them to leave with plenty of time to safely drive to school, park and walk in to school. If you drop your student off, please do so with enough time so that students can arrive to their class prior to the 7:35 bell that begins our school day.
Students are allowed four (4) tardies to first and second block each semester and on the fifth tardy, will receive a detention. Teachers will use the same tardy policy for class periods three-seven.
Our attendance and late to school/late to class policies are linked in our student handbook. Thank you for your help!Husky Heroes
The Husky Hero Award is designed to honor the exceptional contributions and dedication of our educators at Blue Valley Northwest High School. This recognition seeks to spotlight educators who consistently go above and beyond in fostering a positive and impactful learning environment.
Don’t forget to nominate a Husky Hero! This is a great way to recognize staff members who go above and beyond to make a difference at BVNW. If you know someone deserving, be sure to submit a nomination.
Community Celebrations and Observances - to promote awareness and appreciation of our Blue Valley families.
- The Nineteen Day Fast - March 1-19 - a time of prayer, meditation, and fasting, some adult members of the Baháʼà faith refrain from food and water from sunrise to sunset each day. This practice might include prayers of spiritual preparation for the new year.
- Ramadan - evening of March 1-30 - the holy month of fasting for the Islamic faith. For some Muslim families, it is a time for introspection, communal prayer, reading the Qur’an, and fasting between sunrise and sunset.
- Ash Wednesday - March 5 - a Christian holiday signifying the first day of the Lenten season, the 40 days (excluding Sundays) leading to Easter. Some families will attend religious services and receive ashes in the shape of a cross on their forehead.
- Holi - March 14 - known as the Hindu festival of colors, Holi honors the triumph of good over evil and marks the beginning of Spring. Some families will light bonfires, throw colorful powder called gulal, eat sweets, and dance to traditional music.
- Eid al Fitr - March 31 - marks the end of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month of fasting. Some families will celebrate the “Festival of Breaking the Fast” by joining in communal prayer and meals, visiting family, gift-giving, and charity.
Safety Reminders
With the nicer weather, if your student walks to school, please remind them to use the designated crosswalks and to put their phone down and be aware of their surroundings when crossing the street. We also ask all drivers to drive with caution, with phones down and aware of walkers, as they navigate the roads and parking lots around our school.
