Shutdown Update for our students

What is this?

During the depression President Roosevelt would give a weekly radio address he called a "Fire Side Chat" where he'd pass along information and encouragement. Trojans, there will be a lot of info coming out from various people, I wanted to be sure you felt communicated with directly...welcome to Mr. Bakke's Fire Side Chats. I will try to send this update out periodically. I promise to keep it short, and I will also pass along any info that you might have missed from Mr. Alfano.

I hope it is a source of encouragement, so I hope you will give it a few minutes of your time.

I'm super proud of how you handled yourself these past few days of school. You all are so tough. I think many adults don't appreciate all challenges you all face.

One of the realities of our situation right now, is much of what you have "to do" is being on-line. Try hard not to just surround yourself with negative. Trust me, I get that this is not easy. The internet makes that even more challenging, it seems to breed negativity. Try to be intentional about finding some things to be positive about this week. You can make that easier for someone else by sending them a short text or snap, letting them know you appreciate them.

Some quick reminders for you... the facts

1. 6 week closure-- which is now state wide, we are scheduled to be back 4/27 if everything goes well.

2. Do your part by practicing social distancing and washing your hands!

3. Fife has a created a way for everyone to get breakfast and lunch. That is all students, even if you don't normally get school breakfast or lunch. See below on when and where you can pick it up.

4. Do I have homework? Not yet. Fife is in the process of prioritizing your educational needs and balancing that with life needs right now. For now we want you focused on being healthy, and helping your families. If homework comes, we also want to make sure all of you have access to it.

5. Seniors, you are our top priority making sure you graduate on time, meeting the standards as modified by the State Board of Education. There are a lot of questions to be answered by our state officials and we will be working with them as they navigate this area. Don't worry we got you , and I'll pass along info ASAP when we get it.

6. Remember to stay off campus (including fields) during this shutdown.

Food Delivery Info

Starts Monday, March 16th. All of you who desire breakfast and lunch will be served.
Food is delivered to your bus stop but on a 2 hour delay schedule and will stop at all regular stops for meal delivery during the first 3 days. Delivery times will be adjusted as needed after the 3 days but we will communicate any of those changes with you.
You must be present to receive meals at the bus stop or at the school location (we can't give it to a parent for example).
If you walk to school and want food, go to the bus loop at FHS between 9:00AM- 10:00AM to pick up both breakfast and lunch.

Buses and bus numbers may change depending on the conditions. Fife vehicles will be marked with our district name and/or logo.
We will continue to stop at regular stops. All safety rules and procedures apply.

Mr. Bakke's Netflix Selections of the Week:

1. I recommend the Academy Award winning movie "Icarus"... yep its a documentary. But its got everything... suspense, danger, drama, its all about how the Russians got busted for cheating in the Olympics. I couldn't turn it off.

2. If you want to watch something funny... go old school and watch the movie "Ground Hog's Day." Trust me... its legit, and we might just be able to relate to it a bit right now.

In case you missed it... a letter to our students from Mr. Bakke

Dear Fife Students,

You are facing truly unprecedented events, and this will be something you will never forget for the rest of your life. I am so sorry you are going through it. I’m sorry that for so many of you, the rewards from the hard work you have put into your sports, concerts, and productions is being taken from you. I’m sorry that your education is getting temporarily compromised. I’m sorry for all the special events that were scheduled that have been canceled. These are memories you won’t get back. I am sorry if you are feeling fear. I know these events are going to impact us all in a lot of scary ways.

But to our beloved FHS students, do not lose hope! My grandparents generation was called, “the greatest generation.” A lot of people think this is simply because of the extreme sacrifice they made during World War II fighting for the freedom of the world, but that is only part of the story. This was the same generation that grew up in the depression, during the worst economic times in our history. They suffered tremendous loss and faced incredible adversity, when terms like “rationing” were everyday vocabulary. They never lost hope, and in spite of those hard times they went through, they went on to save the world.

Fife students, this is your time to show that you have the makings of also being a “great generation.” You are going through historic adversity, which means it's your opportunity to shine bright. Shine by showing others how you care, by your resilience, by being extra helpful with your family, and by showing empathy and encouragement with your peers, and community. Even yesterday you put together a rush food drive and collected hundreds of items in just one day. We continue to be so proud of you!

I want you to again be reminded why we say “Get ‘Em Trojans.” In Fife it means that we will not back down, that there isn’t a challenge, adversity, competition, or tough test that will sway us...there is no such thing as insurmountable odds; in Fife we do not lose hope, and we do not quit. We Get ‘em Trojans!

I can’t wait to see you in a few weeks, when we finish the school year the way we are supposed to... together. Make good decisions today and in the few weeks ahead. And Get ‘Em Trojans.
