Barrington 220: One Book, One Community
This fall Barrington 220 is launching a book study called One Book, One Community!
It features the book Breaking the Code with Gabriella, written by current BHS students Hafsah Khan, Cindy Wang, and 2024 graduate Sarah Pinto. It is a story about the fight for inclusivity and belonging in science spaces, following the story of a young girl, Gabriella, who joins her robotics team as the only girl.
You can pick up a free copy of Breaking the Code with Gabriella during Parent-Teacher Conferences. Supplies are limited, so be sure to grab one while they last! For additional copies, visit the Barrington Area Library or the District Administrative Center.
We will culminate this community-wide read with a special fireside chat featuring our student authors at the annual Winter Wonderfest celebration at BHS on December 13! It will be a wonderful opportunity to engage with the authors, hear their perspectives, and celebrate the inclusive themes of the book.
7:30pm "Bath, Books, and Bed"!
It is time to get back into those summer routines! Please develop a home routine that prioritizes learning. Bathing, then reading (at least 20 minutes a day), and then bed time is one great routine. Experts recommend 9-12 hours of sleep for elementary aged students.
Healthy Living: Protecting Your Family This Season
The flu season is approaching and it's essential to take steps to protect your family from this contagious illness. One of the most effective ways to do this is by getting a flu vaccine.
Why is the flu vaccine important?
1. Prevention: The flu vaccine can significantly reduce your risk of contracting the flu virus.
2. Reduced Severity: If you were to get the flu after vaccination, your symptoms are more likely to be milder.
3. Protecting others: By getting vaccinated, you can help protect others who are at higher risk of complications such as young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
4. Ensuring school attendance: The flu vaccine can help prevent missed days of school due to illness, allowing your child to continue their education uninterrupted.
When should my child get the flu vaccine?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone over 6 months get a flu vaccine each year. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body. The best time to get vaccinated is in the fall, before the flu season begins.
Where can the flu vaccine be given?
- Doctor's office
- Pharmacies
- Public health departments

Are there any side effects to the flu vaccine?
Some people can experience mild side effects after receiving the flu vaccine, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue or muscle aches. These side effects usually are mild and last a couple of days.
By getting your child vaccinated against the flu, you are taking an important step to protecting their health and education. More information can be found at the CDC website: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/
