Libraries ROCKED Summer Reading
If you have not done so already, please take a moment to fill out the 2018 Adult Summer Reading Program Survey so we'll have a full picture of what summer programs look like for adult across RI. Many libraries have already filled out the survey, and so far the responses reflect impressive numbers, a variety of program models and some very exciting outcomes!
To hear more about what your fellow adult services librarians did this summer- online trackers! inter-generational programs! nixing reading for exploring! - join us on Wednesday, 10/10 in Lincoln from 2-4 for a Summer Reading Debrief and Discussion.
OLIS will bring the results of the survey for you to discuss, and hopefully you all will bring materials, stories, insights and questions about all things summer reading as we look back on 2018 and ahead toward 2019.
Get in touch!

Seeking Program Models
Programs, Reading and Community Outreach
American Creed: Community Conversations
From ALA: The American Library Association (ALA), in partnership with Citizen Film and the National Writing Project, invites public libraries to apply for programming grants to host community conversations centered around American Creed, a PBS documentary that invites audiences to consider what America's ideals and identity ought to be.
Applications will be accepted from Sept. 24—Nov. 19, 2018. Up to 50 public libraries will be selected. Learn more about the award guidelines, film and application.
Census 2020 Complete Count Committees
In 2018, the Census Bureau ran the only end-to-end test for the 2020 Census here in Providence County, and we learned a lot about the value of the census and how best libraries can be involved. OLIS is participating in the nation-wide ALA 2020 Census Library Outreach and Education Task Force, which has already begun aggregating resources and information to help libraries prepare for the key roles they may play.
Locally, please consider getting involved if your city or town convenes a Complete Count Committee (CCC). These groups provide targeted, local outreach to get the word out and help your community get counted accurately and completely. OLIS will be involved at a statewide CCC to ensure RI libraries will be informed and included, but local participation is also encouraged. CCCs play an important role in community outreach, and a library should be represented on every CCC in Rhode Island. For any questions about getting involved in the 2020 Census, please email Nicolette Baffoni for more information.
More Great American Content
PBS just keeps churning out the Great American Read content! If you had a successful book display or program on the topic and want to continue engaging with the Great American Read, you can:
- Watch the Great American Read Series, which will air throughout the fall (if you miss any episodes, they are available online)
- Watch It's Lit! (a YouTube series of short video essays by Lindsay Ellis)
- Download the Library Program Guide, with display ideas, discussion questions, and program ideas for crafts, film programs, multi-generational program ideas and more!
Observe the Moon Day
NASA has great resources available for International Observe the Moon Night, a worldwide celebration of lunar science on October 20th, for anyone interested in hosting a program. Next year's Summer Reading theme is a Universe of Stories, so why no start the space programming now? You may also want to check out resources about lending telescopes from last spring's Digital Innovation Roundtable webinar on lending unusual technology. If your library already has a telescope, bust it to observe the moon this October! And if your library is one of the growing number to have virtual reality equipment - even Google Cardboard will get the job done! - perhaps you can incorporate a 360 Degree experience on the moon!

Millennials in the Library
Millennials have been accused of killing a lot of industries, from home ownership to breakfast cereal to napkins(?!) and yet a recent PEW research study has shown that Millennials were the most likely generation of adults to have used a library, visited a library website and even to have simply read a book in the past year. How can libraries expand on services and programs that bring in Millennials lest we go the way of the diamond industry and family restaurant chains like Applebees? Join fellow programming librarians as we dig in to the trending topic of "Emerging Adulthood" to discuss what being a Millennial even means and brainstorm programming ideas designed for this particular population.
