Windermere Weekly Parent Update 10.25.24
As I drove into work this morning, I noticed how the leaves have changed so much over the past few days. Wow! What we get to experience in Ohio with the autumn foliage is remarkable. We are lucky to live in a state with four seasons. At times, especially during our long winter, I have a hard time appreciating what we get to experience. Happy Fall!
It’s been a great week. As I get to be in classrooms, I am seeing and hearing so much growth with our students! Way to go Hawks.
Have the best weekend. See you on Monday.
Julie

Safety:
Monday, we practiced a shelter in place safety drill with our students and staff, assisted by the Upper Arlington Police Department. Each year, by law, we are required to practice six fire drills with our students, three tornado drills in the spring, and an evacuation drill to our safe location, all of which are unannounced. We also practice what we do when a secured perimeter is needed (which is daily in all of our buildings) and what it means to shelter in place, as we practiced Monday. We shared that this was needed if a staff member or student needed medical attention and we needed the main part of the building to be clear. We talk to students in an age appropriate way to explain that we practice these drills over and over again, so that students know exactly what to do in the event of a real fire, tornado or other emergency. Additionally we practice talking through table top exercises in staff meetings, as well. throughout the year. Below you will find the graphic we use district wide. I will continue throughout the year to share information about how we are proactively working to keep our students and staff safe, as that is our number one priority.
Did you know our fifth graders:
Recently, had the opportunity to visit SWACO (Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio) to deepen their understanding of waste management and its environmental impact? Two key takeaways from this experience were learning about what can be recycled and the importance of composting to reduce food waste in landfills.
If your family is not currently enrolled in the compost pick-up program available in Upper Arlington, I encourage you to explore more information available at this link: Food Waste Collection.
Thank you for being an active part of our community and supporting our students' learning experiences.

Facilities Master Planning Phase Two Community Kickoff
Nearly 10 years ago, the Upper Arlington community began working together to plan for the future of our schools, leading to a new high school and all new or renovated elementary schools. Now, it’s time to come together again — to determine the best path forward for the aging middle schools and Burbank Early Childhood School. Join us for the community kickoff to phase two of facilities master planning:
Tuesday, October 29 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Jones Middle School, 2100 Arlington Avenue
Wednesday, October 30 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Graf Center, 2020 Builders Place
Harvest Parade & Parties:
Please see This letter that was sent out on Monday, Oct. 21st.
Explorations:
The theme for the lesson is "The Hour of Code."
- Everyone can learn computer science!
Students will be...
- Learning about Computer Science and Coding from the Elementary Explorations team and UAHS Computer Science students.
- Exploring different screen free activities to enhance their knowledge of computer science and programming.
- Working on programming skills through Swift Playgrounds or Code.org curriculum.
Here is the latest issue of the Elementary Explorations newsletter.
Lost & Found:
Our lost and found is overflowing. Please have your students check for missing sweatshirts, jackets, water bottles, etc. All items will be donated over winter break.
Windermere Library Media Center News
We are enjoying preparing for our upcoming Family Culture & Traditions night and learning a lot about each other and our families! Paletero Man introduced us to Hispanic culture and Challah Day! introduced us to the Jewish Community. Next week we will read about Ramen! All students and families are invited to come try these treats on November 14th!
Coming up in November we will be highlighting in our collection and on Wake Up Windermere Native American Heritage Month, Dia De Los Muertos, Election Day, Veteran's Day, and Thanksgiving.
Strategic plan update town hall meeting
Learn more about the strategic planning process by joining district leadership for a town hall meeting on Tuesday, November 19 from 6 until 7:30 p.m. at Upper Arlington High School. Attendees will hear a review of the research and work done to date and then break into smaller groups to learn about the steps planned to implement each strategy during the next five years.
Family Support - Food Resource
For a second year, the district is partnering with the Tri-Village Packers (TVP), a group of community volunteers who work to reduce food insecurity in Upper Arlington. Families with UA students can register throughout October and early November to receive grocery items that supplement their pantries during the upcoming Thanksgiving break. This is not a Thanksgiving meal but support to offset food insecurity by providing breakfast and lunch items during the extended break from school.
Last year, TVP provided food for more than 90 students during Thanksgiving break, and we believe there will be a greater need this year.
Please review and share the linked flyer and registration form weekly through November 1st. In the coming weeks, forms and flyers will be shared in additional channels and languages. Please reach out to Kristyn Anderson at kmanderson@uaschools.org if you have any questions or need support in a particular situation related to this program.
From the Nurse’s Clinic:
Any prescription medication administered at school requires written authorization from the student’s physician as well as written parental permission. Per Ohio Revised Code, the Prescribed Medication must be received by the health office in the container in which it was dispensed by the provider or pharmacist (we cannot accept medication in baggies). Medication authorization forms and other health forms can be found on the district website at: UA Health Forms. Should you have any questions, please contact the Windermere Health Office at 614-487-5060.
Stop, Drop and Go:
Please refer to this arrival and dismissal doc for guidelines on keeping everyone safe during our drop off and pick up times.
Wireless Usage/iPhones/Gizmos:
As smartwatches become more common among students, parents have asked about settings that might reduce the risk of the device causing a distraction during school. Here are links to information about school-time settings for two devices we see here at school, the Apple watch and the Gizmo watch. We kindly ask that students use these settings. Please know we will always call you or allow your child to call you during the day, if needed. If a Smartwatch becomes a distraction, we may ask a child to keep it in their backpack.
Student Absences:
Please email windermereattendance@uaschools.org along with your child’s teacher, any student absences. For extended absences (vacations, travel, etc.) please submit a pre-planned absence form. For more information on the district attendance policy, please visit the district's attendance web page. For all medical appointments, please provide a doctor’s note.
