The Weekly SharkBeat!
SJHS Weekly Parent Newsletter - September 3, 2023
BEING PREPARED
With the first hurricane/tropical storm of the year for our area, living on the coast teaches us to stay prepared. I hope you all fared the storm with no major damages and all are safe. As we stay prepared for the season, I would like to encourage you, especially if you have a senior, to be prepared for this year. Underclassmen work to prepare for senior year, but seniors prepare for the high school finale, and it comes fast. Please encourage your senior to continue to focus on academics, get involved, take advantage of events, make lots of memories, and have fun.
This past week our students had the opportunity to practice our fire drill procedures along with our intruder drill. Everyone did a great job! We will have additional drills throughout the year to prepare our students and staff.
As a reminder, Monday is Labor Day and there is no school. Enjoy the long weekend and we look forward to seeing everyone Tuesday morning.
Thank you for taking the time to review the Weekly Sharkbeat Newsletter. Please check the school website and Facebook page for additional updates and information. Thank you for choosing to be a part of the Shark family. Have a great evening, keep swimming forward, and as always, Go SHARKS!

A Note From Guidance
The school year has already started off great with our students. Please feel free to reach out to our department if you have any questions or concerns.
Seniors during the month of September you will start getting emails from Mrs. Tubbs about scholarship opportunities so make sure that you are taking advantage of those.
September 15 will be our College Application Day. College representatives will be here to assist with filling out your college applications. More information will be coming out soon about signing up for this.
College App Day
College App Day is planned for 9/15. If your student is undecided about college or a college, please encourage them to attend College App Day. Guidance will make an announcement of how to sign up in the near future.
Security
This year HCS implemented some new security measures which we have adopted here at SJH as well as changed a few things to help enforce the safety of our students and staff.
When visiting the school, all visitors will use the front entrance off of Hwy 707. Our security guard will greet you and inquire about your visit. We ask that you please have an ID ready to present to the security officer and bring into the building with you.
Also, all gates are locked once school starts. Students arriving late or leaving early will use the front entrance to go around the circle to the student parking lot.
Gifted and Talented Referrals
Any parent who wishes to refer their child for placement in the gifted and talented program should complete the attached form. Please send the completed referral form and any standardized test scores to the Gifted and Talented Office or email to Wendy Bernstein at wbernstein@horrycountyschools.net by September 18, 2023. It will be a parent responsibility to ensure that their child is present during the test days that each school selects for testing.
Early Pick Up
If you plan to pick your student up early or your student will drive off campus early, please send a note with your student to be turned in before school starts at the Welcome Desk. We will verify the note and give your student a pass to meet you or leave at the appropriate time. Sending a note cuts down on class interruptions. Unfortunately, we cannot accept phone calls or emails to dismiss students. We appreciate your help.
Student Parking
Any student wishing to park on campus must register their vehicle with the school and purchase a $30 parking decal by Friday, September 8 to avoid a parking ticket. Senior decals are free this year but still must be registered. Vehicles may be registered by using the attached google link and payments should be made via My Payments Plus. For more information, go to SJH Student Parking 2023-2024 (google.com) or contact Wynnette Smith at wsmith004@horrycountyschools.net.
