A Jolly Good Time!
Bear Families,
There is NO tired like last week of school tired! Field day this year was absolutely EPIC! Thank you to EVERYONE who made it possible. I won't spend a ton of time thanking people because Mr. Wilson already did a great job doing that. However, I do want to thank Mr. Wilson. As you can all see, he puts his heart and soul, blood, sweat and tears and MANY hours into making this day a success. We can't thank him enough for the fun and for the lifelong memories he helps to create. Thank you also to Bethany Donatelli for her leadership and organization skills as the PTA lead for field day.
Thank you also to everyone who helped make the rest of the week special. From the K parents here for Donuts with Grownups to the PTA brining pizza to all the room parents helping with classroom parties and, of course, our 5th grade families who came to support Clap Out. It was a FUN and EMOTIONAL week! We had many tears on our last day and although we don't want the students to be sad, we get it. We love that they love it here and we are going to miss them dearly over the summer and especially our 5th grade group as they go off to middle school.
We kept saying, "Don't cry because it is over, smile because it happened", but isn't hard. It's sad to leave when you have such strong relationships and such a strong community. THANK YOU all for helping to foster this and make Bluffsview the amazingly, wonderful place it is. We couldn't do it without all of you! Have the best summer!
Honored to be Bears,
CKLA: A New Language Arts Curriculum for Next School Year
This upcoming school year, our teachers will be implementing the Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) curriculum for reading/ELA. Worthington selected this curriculum after careful consideration and a successful year-long pilot program. We are very excited to see the positive impact this vertically and horizontally aligned, evidence-based program will have on our students’ reading!
Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) is a language arts program for Grades PreK-5 that combines an explicit, multisensory approach to phonics with rich texts carefully sequenced to build content knowledge—so that learning to read and reading to learn develop together. Every day in Kindergarten–2nd grades, students complete one full lesson that builds foundational reading skills, as well as one full lesson that builds background knowledge. In Grades 3–5, students start to master the basic skills of reading, further opening up their worlds.
Stay tuned for more information on this exciting new curriculum and click below to learn more about WHY/HOW it was chosen.
Stay Calm and Parent On: Combating the Summer Slide
The "Summer Slide" is an educational term for the tendency for students to lose some of the academic gains that they made during the school year. The good news is that it can be avoided and it doesn't mean you have to "teach" your kids all summer. Going on outings, talking with your child, reading or having your child read and asking your child questions to keep their brain engaged can all help. Students also keep access to Lexia, ST Math and Keyboarding without Tears (3rd to 5th grades) through the end of July. One of the best ways to ensure your child stays sharp is to have them do 30 minutes of learning a day (4-5 times a week). Each week day give them a choice of ST, Lexia, Keyboarding, Reading or Journaling (in your new Bluffsview journal, thank you PTA). By the end of the week make sure they have done each one a few times. We know what they will say..."It's summer!" Yes, they are correct, but they will still have almost the whole day to play! Trust us, their brains will thank them in August!
