Weekly Outcall @Lincoln

As we continue our efforts to proactively support our students’ social-emotional health, D203 is continuing to partner with Elyssa’s mission, a nonprofit organization dedicated to suicide prevention, to implement the Signs of Suicide (SOS) Program and/or refresher in grades 6-12. SOS is an evidence-based program that incorporates two key suicide prevention strategies: a curriculum that raises awareness of suicide and mental health issues and a brief screening for depression and other risk factors associated with suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

The program is designed to:

• Increase knowledge and awareness about depression;

• Encourage students to seek help for themselves or on behalf of a friend;

• Reduce stigma around mental illness; and

• Engage parents and school staff as partners in suicide prevention.

On December 2nd, 7th grade will be presented with the program.

The program will be facilitated by our student service staff who will engage students by showing the SOS video and leading students in a discussion about how to implement the key message of Acknowledge, Care, and Tell (ACT). Following the discussion, students will complete a brief depression screener, as well as a response card that allows them to indicate if they would like to speak to an adult about themselves or a friend.

The depression screener addresses thoughts and feelings a student may be experiencing that may not be evident to parents or teachers. The screener does not provide a diagnosis of depression but rather alerts school staff to students who need further investigation. Student services staff (social workers, school psychologist, or counselor) or a qualified community mental health partner will meet with any student whose screener indicates a need. Parents/guardians will be notified if their student is seen and provided with any necessary next steps which may include a referral to a community provider, the development of a school support plan, and/or the development of a progress monitoring plan with student services staff.

Starbucks Book Club will have our first meetings on December 12th or December 13th, depending on your group's assignment. Students should have all picked up their copy of our first book, Hummingbird, by now. Please check the Group Assignments Document for details on your student's group, location, date, and drop-off/pick-up information. The final two meetings of our Audition Boot Camp (12/2 & 12/9) will be dedicated to putting everything we have learned into practice through a Mock Audition! Students will get the information for their mock audition in our meeting on Monday December 2 and will complete a Mock Audition in our final Boot Camp meeting on Monday December 9. It is important that students attend the final two meetings if they plan to participate in the Mock Audition.

This final piece is for students who are interested in auditioning for the musical, but were unable to attend Audition Boot Camp. As a reminder for all parents and visitors entering our school when buzzing in at the front door. For everyone's safety, we kindly ask that only one person be allowed entry at a time. If you notice another individual at the door, please avoid holding it open for them and ensure they have rung the doorbell and been granted access by our office staff. • Please remember that our front driveway is closed to parent/family drop off and pick up between the hours of 7:30 to 8:00 am and 2:45 - 3:15 pm. Please use the drop off lane located off Waxwing for student drop off and pick up.

• Electric bikes/scooters - please note in accordance with Naperville city ordinances that many E-bikes are allowed only in specific locations when it comes to roadways and sidewalks. Thank you to School Resource Officer Kevin Merrihew who shared this presentation with our community for more information. Any motorized vehicle that is gas powered is prohibited on school property and may be subject to conversation involving Officer Merrihew.

As we continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, I want to remind all families of a few important policies regarding outside food and beverages. At Lincoln Junior High, delivering catered food to students for celebrations or sharing food during lunch is prohibited. This practice helps ensure the safety of all students by minimizing the risk of exposure to allergens that could compromise their health.

Additionally, we encourage all students to bring water bottles for use throughout the day. Please avoid sending sports drinks, sodas, or other beverages to school, as this helps us maintain our allergy-sensitive environment in classrooms. Thank you for your continued support in keeping Lincoln a safe and healthy place for all!

Classes begin daily at 8:00 am. It is important that students arrive at school on time and are ready to learn. For detailed information, please click this link.

If a student is to be absent or late to school, the parent or guardian must call the school's absence line before 7:45 a.m. at (630) 420-3881. This line is open 24 hours a day and recorded messages can be left anytime before 7:45 a.m.

If you need to pick up your student early for an appointment, there are a couple of options we ask that you follow. The day of the appointment, send a note with your student indicating what time you need to pick him/her up and the reason for leaving. Your child must bring the note to the main office before 8:00 a.m. You may also call the Lincoln Junior High Attendance Line to notify the office of your child’s departure time. A pass will be provided and all teachers are notified of any early dismissals. A parent/guardian must come into the building to sign the student out.

The full intramural schedule can be found here for the entire school year. Students need to pay a one time $26.00 intramural fee to the front office which allows them to participate in unlimited intramural programs. Off campus Intramurals are an additional fee.
