A Note from Dr. Martin
Hello LISD Families,
Second semester is in full swing, and we are making great progress on a number of mastery based learning initiatives. Here are a few important updates:
- The elementary staff has created a new mastery based report card, which will give parents much more accurate information about a child's mastery of knowledge and skills in each subject area...plus work habits, character habits, attendance, and enrichment. Thanks to the elementary team for many productive planning sessions, which included a review of mastery based report cards from other schools, and a robust cycle of revision. Special thanks to Lorri Swanson and Kathy Booth for taking the lead on this project and managing the technical changes.
- You already know that our Portrait of a Graduate work is underway. The mastery based learning team will be meeting next week to plan the Zoom focus group session and discuss our process so far.
- We are in the process of forming a secondary student committee called Lobo Voices, which will meet once a month to give us feedback on mastery based learning decisions like the syllabus format, portrait of a graduate, and course learning outcomes.
- A representative from the statewide Mastery Based Learning Collaborative research team will be visiting our school on Friday, March 21. Research team members are visiting only a few Cohort II schools this year and LISD has been chosen as one of the sites! We are excited to host our visitor(s) and shine the light on our mastery based learning journey and the joys and challenges of this transition work in our community. We eventually hope to become a model for other small rural districts.
Have a wonderful weekend. Monday, January 20 is a public holiday to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and his incredible legacy of non-violent advocacy for civil rights. Yes, it's a three-day weekend for lots of folks, but I hope we can all take a few moments on Monday to reflect on issues of equity and how we might personally contribute to a better world for everyone.
All my best,
Martha

Tell Our Elected Leaders that Island Schools Deserve Better!
San Juan County schools are significantly under-funded due to a state formula that doesn't take into account the cost of living in the islands. The three school districts are working together to demand action from our elected leaders. Please visit supportislandschools.org to learn more and find out how you can help this effort.
January Superintendent Update
If you missed Brady's update he sent earlier this week - here's a link. His monthly updates are always packed with great information. They are also linked on the our district homepage and all previous Superintendent messages are on the website as well.
Technology Committee Meeting - January 29
The Lopez Island School District Community Technology Advisory Committee (CTAC) will be holding a meeting January 29th 5:30-6:30 PM in the school's Library Media Center. The meeting is open to anyone who would like to attend and CTAC membership is open to any student, parent, staff member, or Lopez Island community member. The purpose of the CTAC is to advise LISD leadership on the direction of technology use and integration in our school. The agenda of this meeting is a refresh on the technology plan, budget, and technology levy priorities for 2025 so it is a great time to join! Light snacks and refreshments provided. For more information please contact Jesse Hammond at jhammond@lopezislandschool.org 360.468.2202 x2111.
And Speaking of Technology...
These are the kinds of cool technology items our students get to experience thanks to the community supporting the Technology Levy. These high school students are using an interactive panel to solve math problems.
Another Opportunity for Community Service Hours
All School Walking Field Trip to the Swim Center
FLIP Invites Lopez K12 Students to be the First Youth to Stand in the New Pool, Still Under Construction
On January 22, at 2:30, all available K12 students and staff will walk along School Road to Center, and follow the marked route to the pool. We will create a highly visible safety zone along the short stretch of Center. Student safety will be a priority, with clear routes, site preparation and a construction free zone while we visit. Students will stand together in the larger pool waving pool toys and look up for a whole school drone portrait. FLIP is excited for students and staff to see the pool progress and grow excited future swimmers!
LIPTSA Talent Show
Lopez Island Parent Teacher Association (LIPTSA) is presenting the 3rd Annual Lopez Island School District Talent Show on Friday, March 7 at the Community Center.
Senior Profile - Vanesa Raya Sandoval
What clubs/athletics/extracurriculars have you been involved in?
I was in French club in middle school and early high school. Right now, I’m in the journalism club and Spanish club.
What is one positive memory from your time here that you’ll carry with you forever?
Back in middle school, my friend group and I had a little tradition. Whenever one of us had a birthday, we’d get together in the art room during lunch and have a celebration with food and sometimes little gifts.
Finish this sentence: “I cannot live without…….”
Perfume! I have a whole collection of perfumes for each season. I never leave the house without it.
What is one piece of advice you have for incoming high school students?
It’s better to be a loner than to have fake friends.
What is one song that summarizes your graduation from high school?
This year I’ve been listening to same song whenever I get in my car…..Heart to Heart by Mac DeMarco. It’s kind of soothing and really nice.
Who/what do you find inspiring?
My dad because he taught us how to be hard workers at a young age, because he himself is a hard worker. He has always been so supportive and reassuring.
What is the most meaningful assignment ever given to you by a teacher?
In AP Lit last year, we read Klee Wyck by Emily Carr. In the book, she writes about totems. We had the opportunity to visit the Paul Allen estate as a class and see the totems there. It was great learning about a whole different culture and seeing these totems in real life.
What’s the most important quality in a friendship? Why?
I’d say honesty because you can’t be in a relationship with anybody unless you have truth and honesty. Without honesty, there is no trust, and without trust the relationship begins to fall.
In 10 years, I will be…
I want to be an ER nurse.
What are your plans after high school?
I’m hoping to go to UW next year. If I don’t get accepted there, I have another plan to get my RN at a community college and then apply to a four year university with a BSN program.
Is there anything else you want people to know about you?
I love cats!
