Read-a-Thon
Highland Park Elementary’s 15th annual Read-a-Thon started Friday Feb 14th! This is not only our biggest fundraiser for our school, but also an effort to promote the love of books and the joy of reading.
You should have received a Read-a-Thon packet in your child’s backpack.
If you did not, contact the office or your child’s teacher.
For the fundraising portion of read a thon, encourage your student(s) to continue collecting pledges, We have a great start at over $1,500 toward our $10,000 goal. There are prizes for the kids for registering on our fundraising website Fundhub.com, the school identifier is 5defba99a6e7c
For the reading portion of Read a Thon: students should have already started keeping track of their daily minute count. All reading outside of and during school, including reading done for homework AND if someone reads to your child, counts for the Read-a-Thon!
For this long weekend Mr Severns has chosen the following reading activities:
Saturday Feb 15: Read traffic signs when you're in the car
Sunday Feb 16: Read something while wearing a hat
Monday Feb 17 (no school! Lots of reading!): Read out loud with a silly voice
Reading activities of the day and videos of teachers reading will be posted on the HPE PTA facebook page and website: https://sites.google.com/view/hpe-pta/home
Happy reading everyone!

Girls on the Run: Looking for Coaches!
Please see the message below from our Girls on the Run coordinator:
Hello HPE Community!
My name is Katy Korchik. I’m Allison (5th grade) and Lauren (3rd grade) Reilly’s mom and I volunteered to manage Girls on the Run (GOTR) for Highland Park Elementary this year. It’s a great program that uses games, activities, and running to help girls in grades 3-5 to set goals, build friendships and self-confidence, as well as encourage lifelong physical activity. Coaching last year was a lot of fun and I made connections with both kids and the other adult volunteers.
The current plan is to have practices after school on Monday and Wednesdays from 2-3:30 from April 7 - May 28, plus a celebratory 5K run on the weekend of May 31-June 1 (exact time and date tbd).
However, registration won’t open for HPE kids until we have a minimum of 3 committed coaches to run the program. Right now, I am the only coach.
Coaches do NOT need to be “runners.” GOTR is seeking responsible, enthusiastic adults (of all genders!) with a commitment to preparing our youth for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Although “Run” is in the name of the program, GOTR is more than just running and truly celebrates all levels of fitness and ability. I ran/walked the 5K with minimal amounts of preparation last year!
Training for the program is robust and includes online modules and one required in-person session in February or March.
Please let me know if you are interested coaching or would just like more information. If coaching is not for you, I would appreciate it if you could spread the word to others in the community so that we can field a team this year.
Thank you,
Katy Korchik
