Duke Energy Science Night
We are planning and prepping for our Duke Energy Science Night event on Thursday, April 25, 2024 from 5pm-7pm. We have 10 science hands-on activities proviced by the NC Science Festival and many community partners are attending to share their community offerings or hold a hands-on event. There will also be a snack pack provided to each student that attends from NourishNC and a to-go dinner provided to each person that attends by God's First Church led by Ferondo Moore and Brian Dickie (Sweet D's). Laney HS and UNCW's Watson College of Education are providing volunteers. We hope you all will mark your calendars and make sure to attend. Children must attend with an adult. They cannot be dropped off for the event. This is Pre-K through Grade 5 friendly, and all students must be accompanied by an adult.

Away for the Day
Families and students,
Lately, we are seeing more cell phone use in our building and on the buses without teacher/staff persmission. This is disrupting learning. R. Freeman has an AWAY FOR THE DAY cell phone policy.
- Cell phones must be silenced or off
- Cell phones need to be safely put away in backpacks
- No cell phone use on the bus to or from school.
If students are on their phones or using their devices without teacher permission, teachers can keep the phone in their desk and return it to the student as they dismiss. If the phone continues to be a disruption to student learning, the teacher can call the parent to come to school and pick up the phone. If there is a need for you to contact your student, please call the school at 910-251-6011. If your students needs to get in touch with a family member or caregiver, teachers, the school nurse, and other adults can help. We appreciate your cooperation in this matter.

School Hours and Procedures
School Doors Open at 7:15am
School Starts at 7:40am
School is dismissed at 2:35pm
We understand that the check-in process takes time. The school district requires our start time to be 7:40am. Students who are tardy in elementary school MUST be signed in by the adult bringing them to school. The best way to avoid the line is to be on time. :)
To check in a student in the mornings if they arrive after 7:40, an ADULT must walk them in, sign them in to the computer, print a sticker for them to take to class. This is time consuming! It's easier to just be on time.
To check a student out early, you must arrive before 2pm. You HAVE TO HAVE A STATE-ISSUED ID to check out a student early, and you must be listed as someone who can check out the student.
If you have a transportation change for you child, you MUST call/email this in before 2pm. The school phone number is (910) 251-6011.
