Greetings Memminger Families,

We are ecstatically happy to share our great news for the quarter! Memminger met all the requirements for IB recertification and we are good for the next 5 years. Thank you, Mrs. McClary for your leadership and hard work which helped to make the process so smooth. We would also like to express our gratitude & thanks to our parents and community stakeholders for your representation and unwavering support! As you are aware, Mr. Michael Antonelli will be serving as the principal at Memminger next school year and we are extremely excited about his assignment here. We look forward to great things continuing to flourish and our students excelling to greater academic achievements & growth. Finally, Memminger was recognized at the Principal’s March 20th L.E.A.D meeting for exceeding community reading goal minutes for the month.

There are so many reminders of renewal and rejuvenation that come with the Spring season. As we prepare to wrap up the school year in this fourth quarter, we are asking that you continue to motivate and encourage your child or children to strive to positively excel in their behavior & studies. Spring i-Ready started last week and we are excited to see all of the incredible growth of our 3rd–5th grade students on the SC Ready test in May. Teachers and staff have been working extra hard to instruct, review, and assess our students in preparation for the upcoming testing cycle. We are also happily anticipating spring break, holiday fun, and safe travels for our deserving scholars. Please take time out to rest & enjoy the beautiful spring weather!

Grade Level Times:

- CD and Kindergarten: 9am- 10:30am

- 1st and 2nd Grade: 11am- 12:30pm

- 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade: 1pm- 2:30pm

*Some stations will use water* so please remind students to wear something school appropriate that they don't mind getting wet in. Shorts and a T-shirt are preferred. Please have students to bring a towel.

We still need volunteers! Please fill out the CCSD Volunteer Application if you have not done this in the past. Email douglas_burkhead@charleston.k12.sc.us if you would like to volunteer!

The Importance of Attendance

Attendance at Memminger

Arrival:

Students may arrive starting at 7:50am.

Instruction begins at 8:15am.

Students arriving after 8:15am are tardy and must be signed in at the front office.

Dismissal:

Students will begin dismissing at 3:15pm.

The cutoff time to pick up your child early is 2:30pm.

Absences:

We understand absences are necessary for illnesses and emergency situations. Upon returning to school, please send an excuse detailing the reason for your child's absence to your child's teacher. You can also send excuses to Ms. Chris Bocharski at christine_bocharski@charleston.k12.sc.us.

Child Development

In March, CD-3 worked on the bread unit (YUM!) and CD-4 explored the balls unit. We learned all about how they bounce, roll, and how people use them. To celebrate our learning, we were welcomed by College of Charleston student athletes to tour and play games at TD Arena, while our CD-3 kiddos celebrated their learning by making pizzas! We look forward to starting the next unit: reduce, reuse, and recycle and IB’s sharing the planet!

Kindergarten

We cannot believe it is already the fourth quarter! Our kindergarteners have worked hard all year and we can’t wait to finish the year strong! During April we are kicking off our Sharing the Planet unit by learning about the importance of taking care of the Earth! Students are learning about natural resources, recycling, and how to keep our Earth clean. They will also demonstrate how to be responsible and respectful to our land, oceans, and animals. We will finish the unit with an Earth Day celebration to share all that we have learned!

Grade 1

First grade is ready to “spring” into new ideas this month! This month, we have a field trip to Bee City scheduled for April 25th! This will be a fantastic opportunity for the students to explore and learn outside the classroom. In our ELA, we are starting to read about America's beginnings, which will help our students understand the foundation of our country. Additionally, we are sharpening our reading fluency through engaging activities and practice. In Math, we are continuing to use various strategies to add and subtract larger numbers, ensuring that our young mathematicians are confident in their skills. We can’t wait to see what April brings for our First Graders!

Grade 2

Our second graders have been busy exploring new concepts in math, reading, and science this month! In our geometry unit, students have been identifying and learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes, as well as diving into fractions and calculating area. Next up, we’ll explore the relationship between meters and centimeters as we continue to build our understanding of measurement. In reading, we've been focusing on texts about healthy habits, discovering the essential nutrients our bodies need and learning how to take care of ourselves. Our science investigations have begun with an exciting unit on matter, where we’re identifying the states of matter and exploring how matter can change from one state to another. We are excited for a fun and engaging fourth quarter!

Grade 3

Third grade is excited to jump into April! We had a wonderful field trip to the Gailliard exploring the arts by watching a play about the life of John Lewis. In math, we are extending our learning with fractions and multiplication. In reading, we are still working on our unit about early explorations of North America, but will be jumping into Unit 10, where we will move into exploring Colonial America. As we gear up for SC reading testing, we have been so proud of how hard our students have been working and encourage them to continue doing so. We can’t wait to see what April brings to the third grade.

Grade 4

As we wrap up our ELA and math units, we’re diving into some exciting new topics! In math, we’ll be focusing on fraction multiplication, dividing fractions, and solving related problems. We’ll also practice multi-digit multiplication, which will help sharpen our math skills. In ELA, we’re starting our final unit, Treasure Island. This adventure story will help us improve our reading comprehension, vocabulary, and other important literacy skills as we explore the world of pirates and treasure. Our IB unit, “Sharing the Planet,” will help us understand how culture and location influence how people interact with each other. We’ll think about how different environments and traditions shape the way we live and work together. It’s going to be a fun and busy time ahead as we finish up the year with these awesome learning adventures!

Grade 5

Spring has sprung! 5th grade cannot believe that it is already the fourth quarter! We have accomplished so many things and are looking forward to showing what we know in our upcoming testing! In math, we went back to working with division and understanding our powers of ten. For reading, we are finishing our unit on Native Americans and writing a persuasive essay on how they are connected to the land. We learned about food webs and chains and Ms.McCall’s class had the opportunity to make their own food webs with codes and use a robot to “be” the energy transferring in an ecosystem! We are so excited for a well earned spring break and to come back ready for SCReady!

IB Units

What are the benefits of being an International Baccalaureate School? An IB School supports learners in the following:

· To build strong communication and collaboration skills.

· To become more culturally aware through development of a second language (Spanish).

· To gain a deeper understanding of themselves and the world.

PBIS (Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports)

Students worked hard over the last month to demonstrate the IB Attributes of Thinker and Reflective during our March Madness “Show Your Thinking” Challenge. Each week, students shared what they knew in a different content area and teachers collected their thinking into a spreadsheet. In reading, students were using vocabulary words, summarizing texts and finding the central idea, and using the Kagan structure Think-Write-RoundRobin to share what they learned during the knowledge block in CKLA. In science and social studies, students created timelines of events and used the Kagan Structure of Mix-Pair-Share to answer questions about unit vocabulary. To show their thinking in math, students counted forwards and backwards, used number lines to solve addition and subtraction problems, and used a variety of strategies to find area. Students used multiple test-taking strategies on our iReady Reading diagnostic last week. Congratulations to the Green Team for winning the March Madness Challenge! They came out on top two out of the four weeks of the challenge, with over 600 thinking opportunities collected during the challenge.

This Month's Spotlight: ART

The Art room is full of bold colors this Spring as students have begun working on their IB showcase projects. Kindergarten and 2nd have been exploring habitats through 2D and 3D animals, while 1st grade sculpts on Paper Mache Planets. 3rd graders are days away from completing their fantasy maps, while 4th focuses on value through photorealism sketches. Fifth grade is exploring social issues through street art in their community and globally. Students practiced using spray paint to create backgrounds for influential posters based on their PYP topics. Our artists’ and I can not wait to show off all of the extended skills and innovation put into their work this year!

IB Clubs

Students in STEM IB Club have spent the past couple of weeks designing pictures and using Lego blocks to complete a Stop-Motion Animation video. Stop-Motion Animation (also referred to as stop frame animation) is animation that is captured one frame at a time, with physical objects that are moved between frames. When you play back the sequence of images rapidly, it creates an illusion of movement. In K5 the students drew pictures of various animals and then placed them in front of the camera to capture movements. The 1st graders are using play dough to create figures and will be using these in a backdrop to animate. The 2nd and 3rd have drawn backdrops and characters and are in the process of creating videos to show animation taking place across the screen of an iPad using the Stop Motion Studio app. The 4th and 5th graders are creating animation by use of the LEGO blocks. I can’t wait to witness the excitement on the students’ faces when they all come to life moving across the screen.

Early Pick Up Before 2:30

If you need to pick up your child early, you will need to arrive no later than 2:30pm and have your ID ready. This will allow us time to prepare our normal dismissal. We appreciate your understanding and thank you in advance.
